Rough idle and codes P0303, P0305, P0300, P0030, P0036, P0501, P0136, and P0304

Well, one day back and the CEL is back on. I happened to be by the shop and ran in to tell the owner. He said to bring it in first thing in the morning. Back home I used my scanner and see attached....

Hi,

That code is specific to the right front wheel speed sensor (WSS). If you look below at the attachment, it explains everything that the sensor is responsible for. One would think just speed, but it's a lot more.

I included the diagnostics related to the P0501 as well. That is what needs to be done to determine the cause.

From what I'm reading, the WSS can be causing several different issues. The ECM uses it for several different controls. Let me know what you find. I'm interested in knowing.

CEL is off but ABS and brake light remain. I was going to tinker around and locate the WSS to check wiring, but I'm feeling awfully sick from getting vaccinated. It will be a couple days before I'm up to car stuff again.

No problem whatsoever. Let me know when you get to it. I had the shots in March and know what you mean. It only lasts a day, so hang in there.

Hey Joe. It's been awhile. I'm adding the attached convertible to my car collection in August. Before I dive into that I'm continuing on with the speed sensor code P0501. I was under the hood today locating the sensors. I watched a YouTube video after reviewing the attachments you provided me. I want to make sure they are the two that I circled in red in attached pics. Todd

The Saab looks great! Nice car.

As far as the wheel speed sensor (P0501), it is mounted on the steering knuckle. I'm not sure what you circled, but that isn't a WSS.

Take a look at pic 1 below. I highlighted where to look. Also, the code is specific to the right side front (passenger side).

The remaining pics are the directions for the removal and replacement of the sensor. It's only one bolt that holds it in place. Also, the last two pics are for testing it.

Hi Joe. I'm back. There was a fuse missing for the ABS. I popped one in and now the check engine light is cleared. Now, there's a bizarre noise coming from the passenger side. And the cooling fans aren't coming up which is making the car run hot. I missed a picnic invite this past Saturday (60 mile commute) because I had to pull over and turn off the engine, repeatedly.

That is both good and bad news. Are you sure the fuses and relays related to the fan are good? Also, can you describe the noise? Is it loud enough for you to record it and upload it for me to hear? Also, if the engine is overheating due to the fans, it shouldn't happen at highway speeds, so let me know if it only happens in stop and go traffic.

I did a voltage check and 1 out of 3 connectors work. The car was running hot in movement. The previous wss code has erased. I saw that no fuse was in the ABS slot. When I put one there the CEL went out. Also, ABS light went off. Now I’m running a P0140 code. I have attached a video for the sound I mentioned.

Oh, and I bought the Saab. 1999 9-3 SE with 130,000 for $800.00.

First, the code is related to the o2 sensor. It has nothing to do with the ABS or fan.

I listened to the video. That sounds like a mechanical problem and not electric. Is everything tight on the wheel, brake caliper/mount, CV axle, and so on? If you pull the ABS fuse, does the sound stop?

I attached the diagnostics for the P0140. I hope they help. I like the car. What scares me is it's being pulled onto a flatbed. Ugh!!!

I thought flatbed was preferred over the hook. This is all becoming too much for me. Thanks for the attachments. I was going to consider having two cars but this excess maintenance would take me over the edge. I guess I'll sell the Hyundai. I see more problems with it, and the Saab is so quirky that I'm just not sure.

The flatbed is certainly better. It's funny that you said about the maintenance. My father told me a long time ago that a car is the worst investment you will ever make. He was right. Once they get some miles on them, they become money pits.

Thanks Joe, before I hit the link for the Saab (which I inevitably will do) I'd like to address that I don't have a clue about the Hyundai. I got underneath it yesterday and wiggled components and nothing was loose. I messed around with relays and connectors and could confirm that there is a short, or inadequate voltage transfer between the fan connectors and the fuse box. This car will go back in the shop after I search around for the o2 sensor issue (again). It will be sold for $1,200.00. As a 7-owner Saab enthusiast my 8th Saab will be home soon, stay tuned for that thread.

I'll watch for the new Saab post. LOL As far as the Hyundai, is there anything that causes that sound to change? It sounds like metal to metal at some point. If you lift the right front tire off the ground, is there any play in the wheel that may indicate a bearing issue? It seemed to be timed with tire rotation, so check the CV joints as well for excessive play.

If you check the joints, make sure the vehicle's parking brake is on and block the wheels. Then, place it in neutral so there is no load on the axles to check them.

Also, I certainly heard it in the video. However, I can't tell if it's front or rear. It was the front, correct?

It sounds passenger rear to me, which is why I turned the car around in the video. (I had the phone propped up against the wall of one of the neighboring storage units at my rental facility.)
