The turn lights work. The brake lights don't come on, on my truck or trailer. What and how do I check to identify and fix the problem?

It sounds like the fuse #5 20 amp can be blown or the brake light switch is out here is a guide to help you test the fuse and a wiring diagrams to see where the power stops check the brake light switch first. Here is the brake light wiring daigrams below so you can see how the system works.

Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know what you find. We are interested to see what it is.

My 01 Dodge Dakota does not have that kind of switch. It has a connector with six wires on it and if you remove it you have to replace it. I did :( . If the switch does not work the cruse control will not work. I found this out while driving with the switch out of place. I found the fuse you mentioned and it was blown so I installed a new one and all fixed!

If anyone can give me some advice

While in traffic I noticed my speedometer was no longer working. Seconds later the brake light and ABS light came on. After looking at an online forum I decided to go to AutoZone to get a speed sensor (which i still cannot figure out if it goes on the rear differential or the transmission). On the way home the transmission light came on. I now have three dash lights on and a broken speedometer, all happened within eight hours of each other. Also, I noticed that it is not shifting right either, it only shifts in high RPM's, and not as smooth as it used to.
I am mostly worried about the tranny issues.

Thanks for your time, please share knowledge/experiences.

Welcome to the forum, my first thought was a speed sensor. Have the trouble codes checked, some of the national brand autostores will check codes for free.

Would this effect idling as well, cuase I noticed that when my ABS & Brake light came on the car now dies sometimes when slowing rapidly to idle? a bad battery can effect idling.

Drivers side brake light doesn't work? Replaced both sides. Turn signal and running lights work and brake light works on passenger side. Also right turn signal flashes very fast. It started doing that when I had to disconnect passenger side fog lamp because bracket broke.

Have you checked the socket to see if power is there? Often times, the socket itself goes bad and the light doesn't make a connection. As far as the fast flashing, that indicates there is a bulb burned out. If I recall, there are two bulbs for the front. If one is out, it will still appear to be working because it lights up, but will flash really fast because one is burned out.

Check that and let me know what you find.

The only bulb out is on the passenger side? Has the bulb been replaced. This is a two filament bulb. Which mean even though the tail lights work. The brake light side may be burnt. Also check the socket for corrosion.

Check the # 3, #5 and # 9 fuses (replace as necessary) then,

Check for power (12V) at the brake light sockets, when the brake pedal is depressed.

If no power there, check for 12v at the LT GRN wire at the "turn signal and Hazard light switch" when the brake pedal is depressed.

If no power there check for 12v at the WHT/TAN wire of the "turn signal and Hazard light switch" when the brake pedal is depressed. If there is still no power, suspect a faulty brake light switch.

If power exists at the WHT/TAN wire of the "turn signal and Hazard light switch," suspect a faulty "turn signal and Hazard light switch."

Did you check for voltage, anywhere? At the brake switch, pink wire with dark blue tracer is voltage, hot all the time. When the brake switch is activated the white wire becomes hot. You did check for voltage at the proper fuse?

The brakes lites are wired through the turn signal switch, they use the same bulb filament at the rear, just not at the same time.

I have taillights but no brake lights. Changed fuses, bulbs and checked wiring and still can't figure out the problem. Also, have no turn signals and hazards.

Hi:

Do the front signal lights work? Have you checked the light sockets? Did both stop working at the same time? Have you checked or replaced the brake light switch? Have you checked for power at the socket?

I recently had the same problem. Running lights worked, 4 way flashers worked, but the brake lights didn't. I checked all the fuses and the brake light switch. I found out that there is another fuse box under the hood near the battery. There are numerous relays there as well as a brake light fuse. Replaced it and my problem was fixed.

Hope this helps

My truck was working just fine. Was out of town for a couple weeks and truck sat in carport. Went to drive it and went about a hundred feet and the ASB light came on the dash and the dome light came on all by itself. Parked truck back in carport for a couple days and now in addition to the above mentioned problems, the headlights and brake lights wont work. Any ideas?

There are dozens of possibilities. With no preliminary test results to consider, the only thing all of these circuits have in common is the fuse box. I'd start with a visual inspection for signs of corrosion or wires chewed through by a mouse. Use a test light to see if there's voltage on the related fused. Each fuse has two tiny holes on top for test points.

before messing wit the brake switch under the dash

take apart the lights plug. they get correded so bad no connection is made so if your checking for power at the socket it will indacate no power. to trouble shoot the wire harness find the branch off plug right under the rear bumper and test it there next if the bulb connector plug indacates no power but more than likely its right at the light plug its self

I would check your relay switchs. You will only know when you replace them. They are under the dash on the left with your fuses, they are little silver boxes. If that doesnt work i think you have a huge short.

the brake light switch, located just above brake pedal, has most likely failed. get underneath driver side dash and inspect the switch to ensure it's plunger isn't just stuck open. most likely it will need replaced though.
