Welcome back. It sounds more like one of the temperature sensors for that side has an issue. There are two per side, one in the upper duct and the other in the lower. The best way to determine where and what is the issue would be to put a dealer level scan tool on the truck and see if there are any error codes in the HVAC system. Then hope it isn't a failed upper sensor. To replace those the instrument panel is removed so you can get to the sensor mounted in the duct.

Well the easy way uses a saws-all but it's a bit extreme.. Did it say which actuator or give you the part number, there are two on top, one is the mode actuator the other is the temperature door for the passenger side. The mode control can be changed without removing the dash, you remove the HVAC duct over the drivers foot-well and reach up in to remove the two screws from the actuator. It's also possible that the problem is the actuator cams that it moves, that could explain why it works in manual mode. The cams are plastic and have been known to fall off they are under the actuator on a plastic bracket.

Can you see the cam links behind it? They have a bad habit of coming free. The only other items on top of the HVAC case are the temperature control for the passenger side (pic1). But if the AC works on that side then it should be working. The other item is the air inlet actuator, it controls the door for re-circulation or exterior air (pic2). The temperature control actuator for the drivers side is on the bottom of the unit in the passenger footwell (pic3).

Welcome to 2CarPros.

If you have dual climate control, it sounds like the blend air door actuator isn't working. The actuator is located under the dash on the HVAC system.

Here is a link that explains in general how to replace one:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/replace-blend-door-motor

What I suggest is to confirm that the actuator isn't operating and replace it if it isn't.

Let me know if I can help. If you need specifics, let me know if the system is an automatic or manual climate control.

Take care,
Joe

Welcome back:

According to Alldata, with automatic climate control, the left side actuator is located just to the left of the glove box. The directions provide are in pics 2 and 3. In pic 1, I highlighted what I am seeing.

________________________________

The last thing in in pic 3 indicates calibration. I looked up the process for you and found this for doing it without a scanner.

Alternate Method (without Scan Tool)

Note: Do not adjust any controls on the HVAC control module while the HVAC control module is self-calibrating. If interrupted, improper HVAC performance will result.

1. Clear all DTCs.

2. Place the ignition switch to the OFF position.

3. Install the HVAC actuator.

4. Connect all previously disconnected components.

5. Remove the HVAC control module fuse for a minimum of 10 s.

6. Install the HVAC control module fuse.

7. Start the vehicle.

8. Wait 40 s for the HVAC control module to self-calibrate.

9. Operate system and verify that no DTCs have set as current DTCs.

Let me know if this helps or if you have other questions.

Take care,
Joe

Welcome back:

If you have a scanner that can read HVAC codes, it should point you in the right direction. As you mentioned, there are several. One is for fresh air / recirculate, one is a mode actuator which directs the air flow direction, and then two for temperature, one for each side.

This truck is the 1500 model. After replacement of a drained battery, the driver side AC circulates between warm, cool, and cold approximately every ninety seconds while the passenger side works properly. Based upon research, it seems that this is a common issue and that a fix may be to. 1) initiate a re-calibration using a scan tool. 2) perform some steps that require removing a fuse, adjusting the temperature, shutting the truck off, etc. I have done each of the recommended procedures, however I am still experiencing the same issue. We also tested the A/C unit for leaks by draining the Freon, measuring the capacity, then replacing it back into the system. The Freon level was at proper lbs therefore proving no leaks in the AC system. Any idea's of what may need to be replaced to resolved this issue or other steps to try to rectify the issue?

Okay, there are four actuators. the one you need is on top of the heater case. I attached a picture for you to view. To access it you need to remove the passenger side airbag. it will be visible when that is removed. Make sure you disconnect the battery before this repair.

Hello Roy,
Thanks again. I am assuming that this will require the removal of the dash, correct?
If so, without having to purchase Chilton or Haynes manual, and references that you may know of that will walk me through step by step on how to accomplish this task?

Thanks,
Gary

The drivers side is an easy replacement. I sent you the procedure for the passenger side. Sorry about that.

Nothing to remove but the cover under the left side of the dash. That is held by a couple of screws. the blend door actuator is right there. the correct picture attached.

Hello Roy,
Just for clarification I have two questions.

1) The video link here from 2carpros does not apply to me as it looks like that this is for the passenger side, correct? https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=tY6M92fA2ug

2) The image you attached, you said that that is for the left side (driver side) correct? This additional link from 2carpros, shows that the image is the right side. Can you confirm/deny? https://www.2carpros.com/articles/replace-blend-door-motor

Thank again for your assistance.

Hello Roy,
Wondering if this is correct? If so, I will order it and once i get results report my update.
https://www.1aauto.com/door-actuator/i/1ahcx00042?f=1079628&y=2011

After I get it in, do I need to perform a re-calibration? If so, in the steps that you provided way up top, I do not have a HVAC/ECAS fuse. See attached.

Thanks a million again,
Gary

My truck's passenger side heat has gone out and is stuck on cold. It does not matter if you change the vent selected. It is a digital HVAC controller with independent driver/passenger temperature settings. I have tried the fuse trick and it only worked for a few days. I think I need to replace a blend door but are there multiple doors? What is my fix here?

try pulling HVAC fuse first it resets them and may work then. if not these are a pain to replace as air bag has to be removed for access so that means the system has to be charged down in order to remove the air bag

The A/C temperature on the driver side does not go cold when adjusting the temperature in the dash. I can turn the temperature up and it will get hotter but it stops at warm instead of going cold. The passenger side will adjust up and down with no problem from hot to cold air. All mode doors work when switching from defrost to center to feet. I’m assuming it’s the drivers side actuator that is bad but I don’t have any clue where it’s location is. Any help would be great.

Hi,

It will be located under the dash on the HVAC box. It's actually easy to replace.

To get you started, here is a link that shows in general how it is done. You can use this to help guide you.

Hi,

Yes, there is one for the right side as well. It is more difficult to replace. I attached the directions below for replacing it. (pic 1)

Also, pic 2 shows the recalibration procedure when you replace it. I forgot to add it the first time. Note: The recalibration shows doing it with a scan tool and without the scanner.

I hope this helps. Let me know if you have other questions.

Take care,

Joe

The air conditioner in my truck 2500 Crew Cab Duramax Diesel started blowing hot air from the passenger side vents while blowing cold from the driver side while I had the air conditioner on. I tried changing the functions to defrost and other vent positions but it continued. After turning the A/C off for some time it worked correct when I used it again. This has repeated a few times in the last week.

Today I drove to the snow and turned on the heater (with no A/C) and the passenger side was blowing ice cold but the drivers side was blowing hot air. Again I tried various vent functions and the air flow remained the same, hot on drivers side, cold on passengers.

Air force seems to be fine, the car just cannot get the temperature correct. It seems to have a mind of its own.

The vehicle is no longer under warrantee and funds are tight. I would love to fix this myself but if I have to take it to a mechanic I would like to have an idea what to expect in order to "keep the mechanic honest".

Hoping you can help, Robert

Good morning,

Are you in heat mode or AC mode?

There are blend door actuators that control heat/cool functions and need to know what you are commanding.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/replace-blend-door-motor

I assume dual controls?

The left door is under the dash by the center. you need to remove the console if you have one.

The right door is on top of the heater case. the entire dash has to be removed to access this one.
