ABS c1185 trouble code

Steve some FYI. I have a suspision that I only need all of the low power wires hooked up and the ground side of the high power wires to make it all work again. I am thinking this because when I pulled the fuses I still had speedometer. When an only when I tugged on those high power wires and removed them did I lose speedometer. The connector was still connected with the three wires out as pictured and I had no speedometer. I own a multi-meter already and clamp on test leads for more diagnosis. ScottM

When I was talking to the gentleman at NHTSA, he told me that the transcript of the report would come in about six weeks and that they would start the investigation as soon as they received it back, signed. Hopefully, they are smart about it and include it in a larger investigation that includes everyone that has had the same problem.

This may help. It is the tag on the ABS control module.

Steve, I have attached a picture of the 2B373 module that I have ready to install on my 1999 Windstar with traction control. With your answer about 2C219 vs 2B373, now I am confused. Do I have the correct module?

The Vet has not answered me yet, but I was hoping that someone here could tell if this piece has traction control or not.

I also stopped a Woman with a 1999 Windstar and asked if she had had any problems with the ABS. She told me that she had, but her mechanic told her that a "tooth" had chipped on the drivers side wheel portion of the axle. (I know this sounds confusing, but it was a Germany lady and she knows less about mechanical stuff than I do). Anyway, after she changed the axle part, the lights went out. She did say that the codes pointed to that, so I am pretty sure it is not related to what we are going through. just thought I would throw that out. William

Just finished dealing with the Vet (Ken) and he helped find me the correct part. He saved me at least $500.00 just by contacting me before placing the order I had made and letting me know that I might not need both parts that I had unknowingly ordered. He is putting the part in the mail today and I should have it in about two weeks. Of course I will keep the receipt just in case we win against Ford and they recall the ABS parts. Maybe I will get part of the money back.

Mine says "EBC 430 TC" and the part numbers are 13252904 and S108199001. I was told this was for the traction control option.

So far so good. Well it has been fourteen days and 1,600 KM's since the module was replaced and all is well with the Windstar. I am going to try to find out but I do believe that the module they used was not a Ford part but from a Ford after market supplier to fleet repair shops. Let you know. :lol:

Hi everyone, I have a 2002 Windstar. I am wondering if some one can answer a question for me. I know the ABS ECU is bolted on top of the ABS HCU and the ECU has electrical wires going into it. Are there any electrical connections going into the HCU?

jackieslamewindstar. In addition to Scottm's suggestions, I would check to see if there is brake fluid coming down the speed control deactivation switch wiring. If you find the master cylinder, there is a switch forward of it. It has a wire that leads to the ECU( ie. ABS computer) Here is my switch you can see the brake fluid:

Please report back I am very interested if your squeal goes away after you removed the fuses. Scottm, yes the top left switch, and yes, both of your suggestions make sense. I have not had the squeal since the ECU was replaced. Perhaps this is another defective part? bad ECU, bad speed switch, and bad sensor or master cylinder?

I have carefully check almost all the solder joints, no "cold solder" found. I have one question, posted in the attached picture. The coil is in the HCU, the big transistor is related to this coil. I simply do not know what is this for, and when should it react. I figure those eight transistors are related to Isolation/inlet coil, dump out coil, one to each cylinder thing seen from the picture.

Great job again George. I have no good answers directly for you, you have officially gone over my knowledge base.

We know C1185 is master relay failure. we know the position of that part, it appears (from my knowledge) to be a transistor, the big one. It must energize the coils, then the "brain" listens to the output of each coil for energy. If it is found all is good, if they fail c1185. That is all I have.

But I want to add something at this point.

Obviously with winter here, complaints have gone down significantly! Is that transistor temperature sensitive? Difficult to test, seems likely.

In my case, the fire was I believe a result of the wicking effect of the brake fluid into the connector and a short created as a result of the leakage. This is the same part the Ford has recalled in several other vehicles and will likely be in this one also, I am pretty sure they will acknowledge that soon.

We see others have found this part to be "leaky". Again, great work GEORGE!

Steve, what I referred as coil should be the motor, I just checked the resistance of the "circuit from HCU" connected to the ECU, the red arrows showed in the picture of my last post, the resistance is almost zero.
also, from that picture, you can see a recycle sign, right underneath it is a relay, just at the other side of those components, I have tested it, when I apply twelve volts, I can here a 'click' sound. So I assume this relay should be C1185 problem, this relay will supply power to those eight transistors, every transistor is controlled individually by main processor and also monitored by this processor. all other error code are related to those eight transistors.
That makes sense, right?
But still cannot figure out why after driving for a while the relay fail?
I will keep on figuring this thing out.

So much for solid state. That click has me worried. Anything that can move can fail.

I had problem #1 with a leaky switch. It was pretty easy to fix.

Forty six pages, I guess I am not the only one with this problem.

Hey Scott, when i had new engine put in i forgot to mention the bad switch to the mechanic. when i was driving van home after two days of new engine being in the fuse popped that controls gauges, i then checked to see if switch was plugged in it was so i disconnected it have not check it since. Today i am going to put a plug in the switches place. Look what i found.

Looks as if the switch melted or caught on fire getting ready to back out and jack up van so i can get a good look at the ECU as soon as i get pictures of ECU i will send them in to the site for the gov.

Is there a way to completely bypass the ABS Control Module so that the dash will work? Anybody got a pin-out for the connector? My thought is that if I can get the speed sensor signal to the dash and just completely disconnect the Control module, I should be able to drive the car.

Here's my writeup to the NHTSA: The morning of July 11, 2010, the ABS Control Module on our 2002 Windstar suffered an internal fire due to brake fluid leaked from the bad switch, resulting in a loss of proper brake function and no readings from the speedometer, tachometer, and odometer (as well as multiple warning lights). This occurred several weeks after having had the Brake Pressure Deactivation Switch recall performed (NHTSA Campaign ID 09V399000, Action Number EA08021). The local Ford dealership which had performed the initial recall work refused to repair or replace the module under the recall or as a warranty claim, stating that it was not part of the recall, nor was it apparently damaged at the time of the brake switch repair. I subsequently removed, opened and examined the control module (8/28/2010), and found blackened brake fluid present inside the module at the connector pins. I also found evidence of significant burning around the pins at the connections to the printed circuit board. This evidence included the blackened fluid, severe discoloration, and lifted traces, all of which are clearly apparent in photos of the module interior. Luckily, it appears that an internal trace burned through and interrupted the fault current prior to the failure becoming a runaway fire event. At this time the vehicle has not been repaired, and is sitting idle. I have kept the failed Control Module for examination as necessary. Sorry for the double-posting, but the response I got to my other thread wasn't as targeted as I am looking for.
