Engine will not crank over?
2002 CHEVROLET SILVERADO

Clicking? or nothing at all? If you hear a click, then either the battery is weak, or the starter, possibly bad battery cable connections, check and clean both ends of BOTH cables! Dissconnect negative(-) first, and put it on last! If no click the starter relay is no good! Other possibility is the theft system, what does the little dash light do with the key in the on possition? If it goes out, it OK...Starter relay is in the underhood fuse block...your owners manual will show which one it is! Try swapping two of your relays...
I checked the security light, and it did go off, so should be fine. However, there is NO clicking, so I pulled the relay like you said. I'm not sure how to tell if it is bad, but there is noticeable discoloration on one of the prongs in comparison to the other relays right next to it. I guess I will replace that and see what happens. Thanks so much for the quick response.

Computer problem
2002 Chevy Silverado V6 Two Wheel Drive Automatic 86,000 miles
----------------------------------------------------------------
I went out to start my truck, and it would't turn over, I thought my Battery was the problem so i jumped it and it started, three days later i tried to start my truck and it would't start, so i tried jumping agian, and still would not start, I unpluged the cables and took my battery in to charge, well it needing to be charged wasnt the problem, the battery was fully charged, I hooked my cables back to my battery, and pulled every fuse inside under my dash and under the hood to see if any were burned out and they were all fine. I went to start it and it started but i noticed my security light is on and my radio wont work. thier is a little red light by my radio that is blinking. So i took my truck to work and 8hrs later it wouldnt start agian, Can you please help ?

You have a pass lock system module problem. Most likely the resistor inside the module is failing because your battery was low at one time or the other. Pass lock is a factory security feature that uses a resistor inside of your ignition switch to activate your fuel pump. When the battery voltage is low or when it is spiked ( as in the case of jumping the battery) this resistor can be damaged. Sorry to say , but I think this is your problem. The dealer is usually the only one who can properly test and fix this..keep me posted...
You can temporarily disable the system and your truck should start..here is how..turn the key on but do not crank the engine..leave the key in this position until the security light goes out..this should take about 15 or 18 minutes, then turn the key off for 6 seconds,,then start the engine...

If you have to play around with the key-replace ignition switch.

agreed, why i was asking you if it cranked or not was trying to figure out if just sometimes it wouldnt turn over untill you turned it off and back on to crank again.
but sounds like the switch to me.

Th newer batteries can go out without any warning. A cell can open or short and it is dead.

Replaced the starter, replaced the batter cables, made sure all cables are cleaned and tight. battery is fully charged, and alternator is good. Here is the symptoms. When I turn the key on, everything works (lights etc) when I go to crank it, I get a click and all power goes out, then I get a clicking noise in the dash area. After a few seconds, power comes back on. Still no start. Please help! I need a diagnosis!!!

Could it be the ignition switch? I'd hate to go spend $100 bucks on one and it not be that. This really has me stumped. I really appreciate any help!

it cold be the ignition switch but it could be a few other things as well. It could be a neutral switch or there is afuse on the inside of ht truck for start as well. I'm sending the schematic along..you shold be able to follow this with a test light to see what's wrong. make sure to check fuses first.....

engine wont crank/new starter battery/transmission professionally rebuilt. starter makes a loud clunk. took both belts off still nothing.

if the starter makes a loud clunk, two things either engine is locked up or the torque converter bolt has locked against the block. so try to move by hand backwards to see if loosens the torque converter bolts. If it does then have transmission professional fix it.

the gear selection indicator on the dash is lit but the only gear selection that lights up is reverse, when in park the doors do not unlock automaticly but the truck will restart. is this problem a switch or sending unit and where is it?

A common problem that your describing is a neutral back up switch, some would call it a range switch, it is on the left side of transmission and has two electrical connectors on it, do you have any shifting problems or know of any eng/trans codes? GM came out with an updated part, here is a picture

Check battery condition and connections if okay could be one of the following causing it.
Stater, starter relay, transmission range switch and ignition switch-

starter solenoid is sticky/misfiring.easiest to just change complete starter or live with it till it fails completely. mine has been doin it occaisionally for a couple yrs now. so i live with it. i had another 1 that failed everytime so i took it apart and turned out the solenoid piston was rusted stuck so i cleaned and reassembled and all was good.

also could be the starter dive(gear) itself. in that case it has to be replaced or a new starter bought.

I have a 2002 Chevy Silverado P/U 4.8L. I believe my starter is out as I have excellent power (all the lights come on with no dimming), have even tried to jump it but can't even get clicking. Is it my starter (which I have tapped on with a hammer as suggested by another) or is it my ignition switch which I am not sure of the location? I have a Fluke Meter but am not sure how to test either the starter or the ignition switch which I can't find.
Thanks,
Skot Kees

I would start by jumping the starter relay located under the hood in the fuse box. Remove the starter relay and use a jumper from 87 to 30 as labeled on the relay. If it starts it going to be something on the ignition side, or a bad relay. If it doesnt start the problem is most lilekly be on the starter side.

Thank you.
Before I received your response I removed the starter's mounting bolts and loosened the starter with intention of removing to check ground connection. I then received your response and decided to reattach the starter rather than wiggling it around the maze.
I jumped the relay and the starter was cranking the engine fine. I replaced the relay and the engine cranked successfully multiple times.
Is there something else I should be concerned about? Is it a relay going bad, or was it the starter was just jammed? Any additional insight would be appreciated so that I may be further enlightened.
Thanks,
Skot
