Hi, I am replacing my rear driveshaft on my truck listed above (1500) with a used driveshaft off of the same year and model. My question is pertaining to marking the driveshaft prior to removal for easier install matching the lines up so that it is in balance. Now, I marked the driveshaft prior to removal, but how does that work with a new driveshaft? How do I know that it is aligned properly and also what kind of grease do I use when reinstalling?

Good evening,

You should make the same mark on the donor driveshaft in the same spot and then line that up to the splines at the slip joint.

You can use some wheel bearing grease. A light coat on the splines and then use a hand grease gun on the fittings.

Okay, so line both drive shafts up and mark the new one in the same spot as the old? Also, I don't have a grease gun, I'm going to have to buy whatever grease I need from the auto part store.

Use grease. ATF is no good for this. You need high temperature grease.

Drive Train Axles Bearings problem
2005 Chevy Silverado V8 Four Wheel Drive Automatic 58 km miles

my truck makes a noise only when i pull away from a stop and it shifts into 2nd and 3rd. if i put a load on the drivetrain with quick acceleration, there isn't a noise. i also hear the noise if i cycle the transmission from reverse to drive and back. i changed the
u-joints and the noise is still there. with some help, crawled underneath and had the transmission cycled from revverse to forward and the noise seems to be coming from inside the driveshaft. i know this sounds funny but it's true. it is the heavy duty aluminum shaft. one other person suggested that it sometimes a noise in the transfer case can travel the drive shaft. can you help with any ideas.

Could very well be, the aluminum d-shafts act like speakers when it comes to noises.Might want to havea shop look at it to see if they have any ideas. Depending on how much you use 4wd, it could be the transfer case chain guides are worn and letting the chain bang around, but you wont be able to tell without disassembling the transfer case to see

it cold be low on oil bu tif it is it's leaked out someplace. I t may be a bearing going bad or maybe the center support driveshaft bearing if you have one. use AUTO TRAKll or equivalent fluid 2 qts.

I recently noticed a squeak in my rear end when accelerating up to about 30-40mph. I have located it to the drive shaft. I researched that u joints make a similar sound when they go out. But the sound seems to come from the center of the drive shaft. It also appears the rear differential case is covered in dirt and oil residue. I'm not sure if leaks or not. I am curious as if maybe this is a worn out U- Joint or what. HELP!

Check to make sure the gear lube is full in the differential. There is a check plug on the passenger side of the differential about mid way up.

As far as the noise, most likely it is a u-joint. Have you checked for excessive play in the joint? And as for the noise, chances are it is resonating up the drive shaft.

Here are directions for replacement.

when replacing the rear drive shaft with a used but factory driveshaft does it require balancing or any other servicing other than reeplacing the U-Joints

Rear drive shaft broke and I cannot find a replacement? Truck is a 2500HD four wheel drive regular cab long bed. Ordered one from NAPA and it was four inches too long 61" the next shorter one would be a foot too short. Dealer can order one for double the price of a parts store but they could not tell me what length it would be. So if anyone has an idea where I find out exactly what length I need and where I could buy one I would be very thankful.

That is really strange that you have a size they do not list. The dealer cannot find you one using the VIN number? If you could get a part number that would really help. The dealers catalog has to show length since there are multiple sizes otherwise they would not know if they ordered the correct one.

Dealer say's he can get me one using the VIN number but he does not know what length it would be but assures me it will fit. It is double the price and a one hundred mile round trip to get it and I would like to know it is going to be the right size.

Exact same issue: except ours is a 2003 Silverado 1500 (reg. cab, long bed). The rear drive shaft is 57 inches long, measuring center of u-joint to center of u-joint. We bought a 61-inch one, hoping it would fit, but nope cannot get it in, too long. Measured the one we bought on the ground next to the original one and it is in fact 61 inches measuring the same way. All we can find are those three sizes. Next one down (48 inches) would be way too small. Anyone have any idea where to find this oddball 57-inch drive shaft that apparently at least one other person (with a similar make of Silverado) has too?

there should be clips either onteh outside or inside of the driveshaft. put he shaft ina vise and you can either put a socket in that will slide through the driveshaft and another one on the other side that is largerandpress the joint out. repeat until the joint is out then reinstall the same way.

I am hearing and feeling a vibration noise in my truck. I mostly feel it when I get up to aroung 45-50 Mph, I can feel iit in the gas peddle. Very occasionally it will make a clunking noise, but not very often. I dont know if it is a CV joint or a U joint, or it could even be the tires off balance because a weight fell off.

clunk when you hit a bump or move the steering wheel suddenly?

how loud? wheres it sound like its coming from and does it sound like a tire thud or different?

if the weight fell off it could cause a vibration felt in the pedal, but not really that clunk.

get the tires rebalanced and well see bout that clunk.

It doesnt clunk but maybe once in a great while, so I dont think that is anything. But I do feel the vibration in the pedal, so I am have my tires rebalanced today.

hard to say since its so far apart, just probably a few different things adding up for the clunk. weight, wind, speed list goes on.

definetely would get the tires rebalanced for the vibration, maybe a rotation also.

Just recently I have noticed a squeaking coming from the back of my truck when I drive. It started out intermittently but now it’s becoming more frequently. Its only is noticeable when I’m on the throttle, and it doesn’t matter if I’m going 5 mph or 55 mph the noise will just increase and continue with speed, my assumption is that it’s the bearing in my u-joints and that they either need greased or replaced. Do you have any ideas?

I think you hit the nail on the head! GM uses epoxy tio hold em together, use a torch and heat until the glue oozes out of the small hole, you'll see it, then replace as normal.

I have never heated a joint to loosen the injection molded plastic that holds a joint in. You will shear the substance as you use a press to remove the joint.

2000 Chevy Silverado Four Wheel Drive Automatic

Recently my rear U-Joint snapped and my drive shaft fell. I replaced the drive shaft with a used one from a repitable salvage yard. It came with a working U-Joint so I did not replace it. After installing, my front end is vibrating around 50mph-60mph. I have been told the drive shaft may be out of allignment or the tires need balancing (replaced tires 7 days ago-balanced). I don't recall if the vibration was occuring before I had the tires replaced. Any suggestions?

ok so i finnaly got around to replacing my u-joints i had to take it to my friends shop where we used a torch to soften up the epoxy to i could pop them out. and i found that it was easiest to use a press because a vice could not generate enough force to pop them out.

but the only thing is now that i replaced the u-joints it still making a ticking niose that i previously thought was coming from the worn out u-joints, when i put my truck up in the air and put it un neutral and spin the driveshaft by hand i can hear the ticking, but the noise is coming directly from the drive shaft, which doesnt make any sense... any ideas would be great. thanks

Hi there,

If the vibration is only since the drive shaft was replaced , i would be getting the uni's checked and also the shaft balance checked.
