My high mounted third brake light stops working .It works on and off.I think there's a loose connection. I can not figure out how to get to it to check it.I need to find a way to get to it to either replace the light or to make sure it's not a connection problem.I have tried several ways to remove it without any luck.

Here are the wiring diagrams and a guide to help you see what the problem is. The power to the third brake light comes from the TIPM and there are many fuses that run it. First see if the brake light is getting power at the light.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-use-a-test-light-circuit-tester

then check the fuses,

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-check-a-car-fuse

Here is the fuse location and the diagrams (below)

If all of the fuses are good then its most likely the TIPM is going out which they had problems with. A shop will need to program the unit unit in.

Please let us know what you find.

Cheers, Ken

The third center brake light is not working I changed the light bulb, but still does not work. i also think the fact it does not work is that my check engine light has come on. I don not know if it is the connecting or what.

I doubt the light has anything to do with the check engine light. have a professional scan for codes because this may be a tpim module problem. The brake light switch sends power to the tpim then to the light. Only a local professional can scan for this. also check engine problems will also come up.

i did check it out, but the only code the found was Brake Switch problem , but the funny part is that i changed it twice and when i went back the second time they told me that it may be the car's computer which i may need to change. plus as i said i changed the bulb in the third brake light and it does not turn on. so i do not know what the problem may be.

that is what a tpim module is, the car's computer and it runs the third brake light that is why it does not work.

you can see by the picture it may already be wired direct, so see if power is going to the light then backtrack wire to see if it is broken. If no power, if power is there then check the ground wire which is in lift-gate.

If after replacement the bulb does not work, I would recommend checking the contacts in the bulb connector. The connectors will sometimes develope burn marks on their contacts where they meet the bulb. Look in the bulb connector. Do you see any burn marks, corrosion, etc? If you do you can try using a small piece of fine grit sand paper to clean up the contacts. Also pry the contacts out slightly to make sure they are making a solid connection. If this does not work you will need to check if there is voltage to the connector. This will require a voltage test light ($10) or a multi meter ($50+) from your local auto parts store. Using a test light, connect it to a good ground and with the brake pedal depressed touch the test light tip to the positive contact in the bulb connector (you can touch it to both if your not sure which one it is). If your test light lights up you have power at the connector, if not you will need to trace the circuit back to where you have power.

I have a 2002 Chrysler T&C with a 3.8 motor. I have 106m miles and my brake lights aren't working. Even worse, I figured out this morning that it effects my cruise. I hit my brakes to turn off my cruise and it didn't turn off my cruise!

The fuse is good and the bulbs are good. Do I have some sort of relay in the fuse box for brake lights or could it be the switch somewhere on the brake pedal itself?

Thanks you in advance for your help.

My lower brake lights went out at the same time. The upper brake light still works. I tired replacing the bulbs with no luck. Tried replacing the brake switch, also no luck. Could it simply be a fuse (where would I find it)? Please help.

the highmount brake lamp and lower brake lamps get voltage from the same fuse. So I don't think the problem is the fuse.

At the lower brake lites, white wire with tan tracer is voltage, so use a test light and check for voltage, brake pedal depressed, if no voltage we will have to backtrack circuit. There is a splice on that circuit, may have to find that splice if no voltage.

So I have checked the fuses, checked all the wires with voltage meter and they are all working. I had a friend who is a mechanic test the wires and he told me since the wires are all getting power I need to replace the whole taillight assembly. If it is on the brake lights that are bad can I just replace the sockets that the bulb goes into?

As long as you have good voltage and ground for the lamp, you can replace electrical connector.

I wouldn't think electrical connectors on both side would go out at the same time. I think something else is going on. Remember you got to have voltage and ground for the circuit to work. Do your tail lamps and turn signals work ok? They use the same ground as the brake lamp.

Ok so I checked the electrical where it plugs into the board on the taillight assembly. I have power when I press the brake pedal. I have turn signals and hazard lights. The left brake light went out and then within a mile the other one went out. They did go out at the exact same moment just very close together

W/o being able to look at it, I don't know what else to tell you? IF circuit board is faulty, I don't know what else, except replace lamp assembly?

Just for testing, you could try using separate voltage wires, jumper wires off battery voltage. Use separate jumper wires from one side to the other, so one side can't kill the other side. see if brake lamps will stay on. You don't have to use brake pedal. With the jumper, you might use an inline fuse, just in case.

If the stop lamps come on and stay on, I don't think it is the lamp assembly. I've been racking my brain trying to figure something w/o being able to look at vehicle. I'm about at the end of my rope.lol

check bulbs first you shouldn't have to remove wires. see pic arrows point to brake/turn signal wires then check to see if you have a bad brake switch if turn signals work

Brakes problem
2002 Chrysler Town and Country 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

Today I was driving and was flagged by another driver to tell me that my brake lights don't work. The middle one, on the hatch lights up, but the side ones don't. Checked bulbs and connections. All other lights work, tail lights and blinkers. We've looked and can't figure out what could be causing this.

Suspect faulty brake light swich. The two rear brake lights are ran through the brake switch (located at upper brake pedal arm) and the high mount brake light is ran through a relay so it is not effected if the brake switch fails..

Hello, I'm Danny.

Are you asking if you can separate a dual filament bulb shared circuit into a separate brake and taillight system? Hope this helps and thanks for using 2CarPros.

Hello again.

So just to be on the same page you are just trying to flip the positions of the brake and taillight positions on the filaments? Let me know.
