Engine stalls

The transmission also drops down in a lower gear sometimes while driving could this be the problem?

The dash lights don't come on right when the motor stalls they light up a few seconds later

I believe you have a problem with the ignition switch. It fails to work after heating up and that is the reason the dash indicators do not light up when engine stalled.

check the chargeing sys. to make sure you working with proper voltage.then the fuel pressure.after that check the electrical.

Are you sure it isnt the intake gasket leak that I have? Could that be triggering the map sensor?

1996 Nissan Maxima 6 cyl Automatic 93,652 miles

I have a 1996 Nissan Maxima. For some reason it shuts down on me, usually when I am at a red light. It starts right back up. I have had the fuel pump changed, the gas filter, the spark plugs & the knock sensor, which I thought was the original problem. I still have no idea why this is happening. It's been going on about 3 weeks now, and it ran fine without shutting off 1 day out of the whole 3 weeks. What can cause this? I am at my wits end.

Engine is stalling either due to idling speed too low or a fault with the MAF.

Get the IAC, MAF and throttle body cleaned and retest.

you need to start checking and stop guessing.
