check engine light on?

We just purchased a 1998 eclipse and the check engine light came on. We had a code scan and were told engine coolant? all the levels are full and it is not overheating. ??? We also seem to have the problem of the car just excelarates on its own. we do not have to use the gas. it just goes. What could that be? Please help.
