Transmission Not Shifting?

My Jeep does fine going around town at about 25-30mph but if I try to go higher than that or go up a hill it wont go any faster like it won't go into drive or overdrive. My Jeep ran fine before this ,it happened just a few days ago when the weather turned really cold and we had just went over a mountain pass. We were going 70 mph over pass and the it dropped down to 50 mph it wouldn't upshift and started to get hot because I was using so many rpms that we stopped to cool it off. The airconditioner pump ?is making alot of noise as well or at least something in the area of the glove box.

start be doing the easy things first ( 1 check you fluid level and its condition 2 shift linkage adjustment and 3 throttle linkage ) give that a road test to see if the problem is fixed . you may need to go to a transmission repair shop to get the bands adjusted . good luck

My Grand Cherokee Laredo gets a code of 720 and the transmission will not shift from 3rd to 4th. I have changed the transmission oil and filter changed about 12,000 miles ago. Can this be a speed sensor? Or, is it something else? I do not want to rebuild t he transmission, at this time. Can you help?

I have a 1999 jeep grand cherokee with 89,000 miles the transmission will not shift out of low gear the fluid is full what could be the problem.

you did not say if it is a auto or stick trans! does the service light come on. when was the last time the tran fluid and filter was changed? if it is an auto trans it could be the output speed sensor. pull the trans dipstick and look at and smell the fluid. if the fluid is brown and stinky it could just need changed but could be worse. if it is kind of pink i would take it some where and have it scanned for codes!

I have a 96 jeep cheerokee with a toyota transmission the trans has been working great the other day driving down the road it just qiut shifting i was a rebuilder for many years but have been out of the trade for several years i have taken the car out for a ride and got it up to about 20 and put it in park real quick and let the park paw rattle it and them it seems to shift till i turn it off and start again then i do the same thing im thinking stuck valve but that kinda dont make sense with restarting the car i cant remember were ir if they use shift solnoids inthat trans when it shifts it shifts great no slipping any feedback would be a great help . thank you
and if you have any pics of the valve body with check ball locatoins that would b really great

Does sound like a sticky valve or solenoid.As far as a schematic, you will need to go here

Have you tried a service? never know, some fresh fluid might loosen things up

My son's vehicle listed above will not shift out first gear. I replaced all three solenoids, filter, fluid and the TCU. still will not change, but we unplug TCM and we can manual shift it and drives. can't figure out please help.

There is a cable on the throttle body that controls shift points.

It is attached to the throttle valve in the valve body. it is adjustable. I would check to be sure it is not disconnected first. if it is connected, try adjusting the cable back and forth to see if it shifts.

REMOVAL

1. Working in engine compartment, disconnect cable from throttle linkage, then compress cable mounting ears and remove cable from linkage bracket.
2. Raise and support vehicle.
3. Remove transmission oil pan, disengage cable from throttle valve cam and remove cable bracket bolt.
4. Remove cable and bracket from case. Remove and discard cable seal.

INSTALLATION

1. Lubricate and install new seal on cable, then insert cable in transmission case.
2. Attach cable to throttle cam, then install cable bracket on case and torque attaching bolt to specifications.
3. Remove old gasket material from oil pan and transmission case and clean pan and screen with solvent, then dry with compressed air.
4. Install screen with a new gasket, then install pan and torque bolts to specifications.
5. Install drain plug and fill transmission with fluid to appropriate level, then adjust cable as follows:
a. Turn ignition switch to Off position and fully retract cable plunger, then press cable button all the way down and cable plunger inward, Fig. 18.
b. Rotate primary throttle lever to wide open throttle position and hold while allowing cable plunger extend. Release lever when plunger is fully extended.

i had a short in the wiring to my fuel injectors causing the 30 amp engine control maxi fuse to blow. I fixed the wiring and the truck will now start and run but will not shift from third gear. I can manualy change down to first but then i dont have second gear just first to third. What could cause this?

HI there,

The dead short may have caused other problems, have a scan done to check for any set fault codes, the check light won't always come on with all codes.
