Bank 1 sensor 2 is the right rear o2 sensor behind the cat on passenger side. Without code, hard to diagnose, but either sensor is not outputting, wires are open, burned on exhaust, or cat has internal issue with it (usually bad o2s and internal issues lead to a p0420)

The check engine light was flashing with the switch on, not running, turned key off and back on light was steady, and would crank. now check engine light does not come on. I have checked all fuses, all good, unless there is a hidden one. I can't pull codes because of no check engine light.

Hi wmbrgi, Welcome to 2carpros and TY for the donation I can't pull codes because of no check engine light. On many cars, the ECM (that's the electronic brain) is on the same fuse circuit as other electrics like the cigarette lighter/accessory port. The lighter is prone to blow fuses on some vehicles, and if there's no juice going to the ECM, it can't tell you what's wrong. Check and test fuse no.24 30amp and fuse no.1 5amp in the PDC this is the one that powers the PCM see below

That's the reason for the lights to appear when you do that---to verify the light works! More than likely, you need to replace the bulb, just in case it does need to alert you there is a problem.....I have seen people remove the bulbs, before they sold their cars, cause they could not/ would not, do the proper repairs, so it would stay off.---The Medic

You have a air leak somewhere causing the 171-174 normally it's the PCV valve tube I see that breaks on these.

The Intake Manifold Runner controls are on the back of the motor and require removal of the upper part of the intake manifold (it seperates into two) to access. Usually the bushings that hold the actuator rods break and cause the codes

You need to retrieve the codes that the computer has stored. Have vehicle scanned with diagnostic scanner. Once codes are retrieved the diagnostic scanner can delete the codes off of the computer which will turn off the engine light.

Mitchell doesnt show a code P1538 for a 98 F-150. All of the codes for that area of #s refer to the IMRC, which is mounted on the lower intake and controls the extra runner flaps in the manifold. Look for broken connectors for the rods that go from teh motor to the intake levers. If all are ok, then it could be the IMRC motor, have seen them go bad as well. The light will probably need to be cleared with a scan tool
