My car has recently started stalling momentarily and then would continue running with loss of power especially when going uphill or when turning on defroster. Eventually the engine stopped running completely.

Hello,

This seems like the fuel pump is going out which is a problem on these cars.

Here is a guide to help confirm the issue.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/car-cranks-but-wont-start

Please run down this guide and report back.

Hello and thanks for donating

If these codes appear than there is a coil not firing. If the coil is known good than check the fuses and fuse links, if they are blown than check for a short to ground in the ignition start / run circuit.

99 ford contour V6 DOHC
I just changed transmission range sensor and now car wont start. I'm almost 100% sure its in right. I installed with car in nuetrul and even check to see if back up lights are lite when in reverse and it is. so pretty sure it's right.
the car gets power to accersorys, like radio. but when u try and start nothing at all and radio will go dead and takes power from accersorys.

I can"t see how you'd put this thing in wrong anyways and for car not to start. had not started car since day before when i went on a longer then normal drive.

thanks for your help

I've tried putting the old sensor back in and same thing.

car ran rough . took to shop and they said needed fuel pump. New pump but still will not start. After trying to start for a few minutes gas starts running out of the air intake. After the pump was installed the car ran rough for a while and black smoke came out of the tail pipe but will not start any longer. Again, gas starts running out of the air intake after trying to start. Thank You for any help Tom

scan for codes and check fuel pressure first. depending on engine it should be 30-45 or 45-60 with key onfirst is for 2.0 second for 2.5 auto parts rent gauges or take it back and have the place fix it right.

What do you mean it won't turn over? Does the starter turn the engine and it won't start or does it just do nothing at all? Have you checked to see if the serpentine belt broke? Get back to me with what you know and we will see what we can figure out from there.

OK first have the battery checked. I would pull the battery out and take it to your local parts store and have them load test it. Let me know what you find here.

I have a 1999 Ford Contour and the oil light came on, then the car cut off. I added 2 quarts of oil. I then tried to crank the car and it sounds like it wants to turn over, but it doesn't. What could this mean?

Most owners manuals suggest retracting the dipstick on a weekly basis if your engine moved very long without lubrication.

You might try turning your crankshaft by hand, to see if it is seized....you should be able to make a revolution with a wrench kinda ez....if it is not

sorry!

let me know your results

After starting and stopping several times in hot weather the 1999 Ford Contour will not start. Temperature gauge is in the middle but not hot. No spark, battery nothing. After sitting for 30 - 60 minutes it starts like there was no problem. There is plenty of spark, good battery, good coolant. What can be the problem.
Tired of sitting and waiting.

Have the same problem -- have changed the starter, replaced the coil-pack/ignition module, have no trouble codes (incl. in memory; also no freeze-frame). Strange to see no answer after almost 4 weeks?!

As stated above, check fuel pressure. You could be experiencing what's known as "vapor lock" where the fuel pressure is too low to overcome the heat of the engine compartment and the fuel vaporizes in the lines.

Rasmataz and Rivermikerat are experiencxed Ford technicians? The engine in the '99 Contour will NOT CRANK at all -- What could not cranking have to do with fuel and fuel pressure? The problem is not even one of ignition, but a starting issue (but NOT the starter). Also, obviously this is a known Contour 2.4L problem -- so where is previous experience?

Yes, we're both very experienced Ford techs. But, I misread your original post. I missed the "it doesn't crank" part and presumed it cranked, but wouldn't fire.

Check starter draw. Both when it is cold, and when it gets hot. Also, when hot, verify that there is power to the starter, and that the solenoid is activating. Also check battery voltage and electrolyte level. And yes, you CAN do that on supposedly 'maintenance free' batteries.

Also, since I used to OWN a 2.4L Contour myself and never had this problem, I wouldn't consider it a 'known issue'. Just because one or two people have the issue, doesn't make it a common or known one.

I also have a 1999 Ford Contour with the same starting issue. We are fine for the first errand. We have to wait 30 to 40 minutes for the engine to cool. We put on our seatbelts so we can hear if there is a humming sound so we know the engine will start. We call this car the one trip wonder. I am soooooo sick of wainting around so we can start the car. If you try to start it too early you have to wait another 30 minutes. So I think this is a problem with this model since my husband has a 2000 Ford Ranger that starts all of the time. Do we need to change the fuel pump or filter? Please help. Thanks

The car was fine when we shut it off but when we went to start it an hour later it wouldn't start! There used to be a buzzing sound when you turned the key on but now there isn't! Do you think it is the relay or the pump? How should we proceed to fix this problem? Please help we do not have much money but really need the car!

Go to this link: https://www.2carpros.com/articles/car-cranks-but-wont-start

If its cranking over and w/n start -Do below

Get a helper disconnect a sparkplug wire or 2 and ground it to the engine atleast 3/16 away from ground-have helper crank engine over-do you have a snapping blue spark? If so-you have a fuel related problem, Do you hear the fuel pump come On when you turn key on? If not check fuel pump fuse and fuel pump relay if so, check the fuel pressure to rule out the fuel filter/fuel pump/pressure regulator and listen to the injector/s are they pulsing or hook up a noid light. No snapping blue spark continue to troubleshoot the ignition system-power input to the coil/coil packs, coil's resistances, cap and rotor, distributor pick-up coil, ignition control module, cam and crank sensors and computer Note: If it doesn't apply disregard it and keep testing

Check to see if the fuel pump is receiving power when the problem occurs. Kater, will it crank when the problems occurs, or does nothing happen when it occurs?

Absolutely, what's the verdict on power to and from the starter solenoid when the problem occurs?

No crank at all/nothing/nada when key is engage to starting position

Could be the starter relay, park and neutral switch/transmission position switch and ignition switch assuming the battery and connections are good. Note:If it doesn't apply disregard.

You got spark and fuel now its time to check the valve and ignition timing.

BTW do you have injection pulses?

I have not checked for pulses but I did spray starting fluid into the throttle body with no results. A couple of times after sitting for awhile it seemed to attempt to fire but only for a second. A friend told me to change the plugs and i DID and when I put them back in it seemed to backfire a bit but never really tried to start

My car started having a rough idle then it got to where if I stopped at a light I had to jeep one foot on the brake and the other on the gas so ot wouldn't die. The idle got so rough the whole car would shake all over. Since the engine light was on I had it checked. The code sai the 2nd plug was misfiring and the #1 O2 was too lean. I changed the spark plugs and now the car won't even start. My husband says the timing is off. His nephew says it's the IAC sensor. Do you have any answers?

I had an overheating problem during a trip and the car stopped running. After towing it home and doing a compression test we found only 60 psi per cylinder. So we torn down the top end of the engine, removed and machined the heads, replaced head gaskets, water pump, spark plugs and all belts. After putting everything back together we retested the compression and got 120 psi in every cylinder but the car still only cranks over but doesn't start. Have verified that the plugs have fire but we're at a loss as to what to do next. Test the fuel pressure?

HELP!!
