Has the check engine light ever come on? It sounds like you have a plugged catalytic converter. Here are a couple of guides so you can run some tests.

and

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-test-a-catalytic-converter

Please let us know what happens.

Cannot get truck started, loses all power when I try to crank it. Have tested battery, starter, and alternator. I am at losss for what else it could be and am looking for suggestions. Could anyone help a non-mechanic compile a list of possible causes?

Pick your symptom:

Cranks but no start condition:

Fuel and Spark:
Get a helper disconnect a sparkplug wire or 2 and ground it to the engine at least 3/16 away from ground -have helper crank engine over-do you have a snapping blue spark? If so-you have a fuel related problem, check the fuel pressure to rule out the fuel filter/fuel pump/pressure regulator and listen to the injector/s are they pulsing or hook up a noid light. No snapping blue spark continue to troubleshoot the ignition system-power input to the coil/coil packs, coil's resistances, distributor pick-up coil, ignition control module, cam and crank sensors and computer Note: If it doesn't apply disregard it.

No crank at all/nothing/nada:

Could be the starter, starter relay, clutch switch/park and neutral switch and ignition switch assuming the battery and connections are good.

Here is what I need you to do. You need to check for a draw. It sounds like you will find one. I will provide directions at the end of this post. What to do is this. You will be connecting a volt meter between the neg battery terminal and cable to see the draw. Remove one fuse at a time until the draw stops. That way we will know what circuit is attached to the draw.

Let me know what you find.

NOTE: YOU CAN READ ALL THAT IS THERE BUT THE LAST PARAGRAPH IS THE BIGGEST HELP IN YOUR CASE.

Engine Performance problem
2002 Dodge Durango V8 Four Wheel Drive Automatic 185000 miles

I have a 2002 Dodge durango with 185,000 miles on it. Lately its been having really bad gas mileage, the engine will rev real high when i press on the gas pedal then a huge cloud of black smoke comes out the exhuast and the truck takes off. It has no real power now and slows really down going up hills. It also has a real strong smell of gas. I've pulled out the oil dip stick and checked the oil fill cap and both smell of oil and gas. I don't know what to check first.

Check the injectors and fuel pessure regulator if it's leaking. If not-inspect and test the following items below:

1.Defective Oxygen Sensors.
2.Coolant temperature sensor out of calibration.
3.Restricted air intake system.

For the pressure regulator-pull the vacuum hose,if it has gas then it's leaking.

For the injectors-remove the fuel rail along with the injectors-turn the key on and see if it's leaking.

Yes, It is an automatic. I just checked the oil and tranny fluid this weekend and the levels were good. I changed the tranny fluid about 10,000 miles back. It wasnt giving us any signs of any issues. Last Friday, we were driving in a snow storm and had it in 4 high, but we didnt go over 45 mph. No problems then.

I have a 01 Durango. I just replaced front drive shaft. Something still wrong. When slowing down or giving it gas to go its like the brakes are locking up or something. It has no power but tries to go. It will go after few minutes. Go to turn or slow down.

your truck most likely overheated and it spit the coolant out of the radiator, try refilling the coolant and starting the engine, if it hits high temps again then mostlikely you have a thrermostat problem

Lack of acceleration, chugging, hesitating, jerking, bogging, misfiring etc. could be caused by one of the following below:

Oxygen sensor.
Catalytic converter.
Fuel injectors dirty/sticking.
Mass airflow sensor/Airflow meter.
Throttle position sensor.
Crankshaft position sensor
Knock sensor
Manifold absolute pressure sensor.
EGR Valve
Fuel pressure regulator leaking or defective fuel pump.
False air leakage.
Fuel contamination.
Foul/defective spark plugs.
Open spark plug wires.
Ignition coil/Coil packs defective.
Incorrect ignition timing.
Cap and rotor.

Note:If it doesn't apply disregard it.
