The picture is the brake pedal switch, it is activated by the brake pedal arm. You have to follow the brake pedal arm upward to find the switch.

Replace the combination switch in the steering column. The 2 lower brake lights pass through is so the turn signals can cancel the brake lights when necessary.

Well i didnt have the tool on hand to test the voltage of the brake switch but the part was only a few dollars so I bought and replaced it tonight. However it did nothing to correct the problem. Knowing that the switch is indeed not bad where should i look next?

I have a 1990 Lumina APV with 140,000 miles. Several months ago I had a problem where the lights would go off. If I turned the light switch off and then back on the lights would work again. Now they have gone out for good. I have checked the bulbs and fuses. All the other lights work including the brake lights, turn signals and flashers. i would appreciate any advice you might have.

did you check for any corrosion? my lumina did nearly the same thing. the fuses were fine but the contacts were all corroded. turn your lights on and move around the fuses, if they go on when the fuse is pushed and off when you release pressure, thats what it is.
