So, my wife and I just got our brakes fixed, as well as our driver side door pins and as she went to drive me to work, it began to overheat and start throwing smoke from the engine it completely maxed the temperature gauge at over 260 degrees. I hardly know anything about cars, but i know that is bad. As well as the fact all of the coolant was now drenched over the right side of the radiator, and there was no more coolant in the reservoir. We really do not have the money to keep fixing things in this vehicle, and i cannot afford to miss work. i just got this job and need it badly. Any ideas? Anything to help would be greatly appreciated.

Your first step is to stop driving it immediately. You may have already done serious internal damage from overheating. It only takes one time at those temperatures to do permanent harm.

You need to fill and pressure test the cooling system to find the source of the leak and repair it. Then just hope the engine is not damaged.

Engine Cooling problem
1997 Chevy Blazer Four Wheel Drive Automatic

As of yesterday my Blazer over heats at a short distance. Water ands coolant are fine.
Could it be the thermostat. Where is it located?
Thanks

Yes it could be the thermostat. It is located under the water neck housing. The upper radiator hose connects from the radiator to the water neck housing.

If you have the tools and ability to do it yourself, just fill the system and pressure test it. Some parts stores will loan or rent a pressure tester. If not, you may have to tow it to a shop for testing.

Engine Cooling problem
1990 Chevy Blazer V8 Four Wheel Drive Automatic 150k miles

Have a K-5 blazer with a front plow on it and it overheats when traveling down the highway. would lowering the thermostat help with this situation or is there a better solution to this engine maintains operating temp during plowing and regular driving but not on the highway. i know this is do to having the plow block the radiator and restrict air flow and also the amount of drag by having a "brick wall" doing 55 down the tollway. any advice would help. thanks guys.

HI:
I have the same problem with my Dakota. The only thing that helps me is lowering my plow as close to the road as I can and keeping it on an angle. Lowering the t-stat to a lower temp may help.

Engine Cooling problem
1995 Chevy Blazer 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic

I have a 1995 Chevrolet Blazer and I think that it has 200,000 miles on it. I am trying to figure out what part could be leaking on my car. It is leaking in the front of the car right when you look under you can see it leak. I personally think that it is oil but not positive. I just had the oil cooler line replace about 3 months ago and was wondering if this could just be a hose. Any answers would help as I am trying to figure this out myself because of my income and being a single parent right now.

the color of the fluid will tell you what line is leaking, red= tranny line, brown= oil, green or orange = antifreeze. Let us know.

I think it is brown. so I am pretty sure that it is the oil.

It will depend on were the leaks is, is it at the front of the motor under the large pulley on the bottom? Could be a seal, or it could be the oil pan itself is rusting out, and has a small hole in it. Could also be the oil sender, these occassionaly develop leaks too.

Because you have a leak in your cooling system somewhere. Start from the radiator to radiator hoses, to thermostat housing, to bypass and heater hoses, water pump, heater core, or the freeze plug.

You need to physically look under the hood and under the vehicle to see whee the leak is coming from.

Engine Cooling problem
1995 Chevy Blazer 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic 150K miles

After my wife drives 3 miles to work she sometimes sees a puddle of coolant under the car. She watches the gauges, temp is normal, new radiator. I checked it where it sat, seems to be coming from over flow, but why. THANKS

I feel that you do have a small leak in the heater core, do not attempt to use any stop leak products as this will cause more problems, get a cooling system pressure test done with the heater on and if it is leaking get it fixed correctly.

I am constantly adding coolant to the radiator. The engine never overheats, but I can smell antifreeze and can hear a gurgling in the system. The radiator was replaced about a year ago. What could be causing this?

Maverick62,
I recently had a coolant problem that is nearly the same as yours. I could never find out why I was always adding a little coolant. Then the car overheated due to what I thought was a stuck thermostat. Now I think it was due to a low coolant level. I now have a bad leak on the intake manifold right rear (steering wheel side if standing at the front looking in) It was difficult to find even after the overheat made the hole bigger. From reading this forum I hear that this was a common problem on the older Blazers. With the engine off you could crawl up on the engine and look closely for signs of coolant. I had to remove the air cleaner ducting.

Just for testing, take thermostat out, hook everything back up. Make sure coolant is full. Does it help anything? Were you having this problem before you changed out the radiator? Maybe air in the system? You do have coolant flow, engine running? Maybe combustion gases getting into the cooloant? Fan work ok?

No wasn't having this problem beforehand. My heater core went out a few months ago and I was told to just by pass it since I don't use the heater. Could be a issue? Once I go grab me a new gasket ring ill try what u said without the thermostat.

Over the years still learning, I agree with JDL but would do something when you take out the thermastat. back flush the system to clean it out. With it being a 84 some dirt and sludge can build up in the system. Then put it back together. I have one rule of thumb I practice, I learned it from my late father. Whenever you empty a cooling system with a thermastat he would always put in a new one when he put it back together.

With the engine cold disconnect one of the heater hoses put a water nozzle in it and back flush the system with water. After it has been cleaned out you can either put a thermastat in and try it or leave it out and see if it overheats. Cooling systems do need a thermastat to restrict some of the coolant flow so when it goes through the radiator it has a chance to cool it down. Without a thermastat it will run openly and will cool down when a little when it goes through the radiator.
