THe dash was removed to replace the heater core. Return to the shop and have them recheck their work. Chances are they left things disconnected.

is the coolant leaking? any smoke from exhaust? it could be radiator fan(s) not working, air in system, clog in system, cracked head gasket etc... if there is no leak of coolant (either visible wet spots or smoke) than it's probably a clog in the system, air in system or radiator fan(s) not coming on.

1996 Chevy Blazer mileage: 64,754. I have a 1996 Chevy Blazer 4x4 with a V6-262 4.3L engine. About three weeks ago, the heater stopped blowing heated air. Having a father that teaches automotive technology we decided it must be the thermostat. We replaced thermostat with no success. Blower works fine. Coolant level is good. Connecting the scan tool the vehicle temperature only got to 195 after extended running time. Unable to find any info on normal operating temp. For a Blazer we are at a loss. Using the fix of old, we placed cardboard over the radiator and that seems to make it work better not great. With the problem possibly being the heater core or actuator with a dealership repair cost of $500.00 I am no doubt frustrated. Do you know of anything else that we might try or any problems that you have heard about Blazers cooling system? There are no recalls to date on all data. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Two things to check: First check for vacuum that goes to the heater control, you may have a loose or cracked line which would cause the heater doors not to work properly; Secondly, check for a partially plugged heater core that would restrict the coolant flow.

Good afternoon.

Smells of what? Is it a sweet smell?

A leaking heater core will put a mist on the inside of the windshield.

Did you have the system pressure tested?

Do you have coolant leaking on the passenger floor?

Yes, it is a sweet smell and at times this does get a fog on windshield. I have noticed dampness on passenger side floor not to bad yet. I had it fleshed to the core once because was not heating well, but after that did have and do have good heat, but the smell is overwhelming from heater, sweet.

I'm sorry, but it sounds like you have some serious issues here. I'm not sure why the radio would shut down the engine. Does anything electric shut it down? Also, what was replaced to stop the dinging?

yes anything electrical will shut it down even if i step on my breaks and my break lights will come on. my step dad said that it might be because my battery was dead and we had to jump it so it may be drawing and doesent have anything to draw it from and cause it to shut down

Hi:
Yes, I didn't know that the battery was dead. If it's completely dead, the alt won't recharge it and any draw away from the ignition will kill the engine. When you jump it, will it stay running with the other battery still attached? If so, either recharge your battery or replace it.

Let me know what you find.

Feel the heater hoses- If the inlet hose feels Hot and the outlet warm, check the thermostat.

If both are warm-remove heater hoses and back flush the heater core.

You will find two under the dash, one on each end. Then there are two hidden under the speaker grills on the dash and two more under the center vent grill. There are also two toward the middle of the dash behind the radio plus the ones that secure the dash to the steering column bracket and depending on options the center console has one above it going to a brace. I think that's all. I've slept since I pulled a dash on a 95. :-)

My spec for factory says 2.2 hrs. Sometimes that factory spec isn't realistic. My labor specs says factory--regular--severe, the severe is close to 4 hrs.

It is located under the dash and requires many things to be removed. I recommend that you purchase a repair manual that provides step by step instructions and pictures to identify parts.

Let me know if you have other questions.

we have to re and re the heater core.. is it do-able in a day's time? Also, I have heard that a small section of the air duct can be cut and taped over so u can cut the re and re time down.. (it's cold outside..grinzzz!) thanks.

Hi:
You could do it in a day. However, I don't recommend cutting things. You'll end up with other problems. I do recommend that you purchase a repair manual because it is involved process.
