Does anyone know where I can buy the tool that holds the camshaft sprockets while replacing the timing belt? I can't seem to get the valve timing just right so I got starting issues. Either one or the other of the two gears seems be out a tooth. I can't hold both gears and put the belt on at the same time without one of the cam gears turning on me just enough to mess up timing. So I'm looking for the name of the tool and where I can buy it?
Probably Amazon slowing shipping in the world and they charge you on top of that. Any information greatly appreciated

Hi JCLEMO,

Normally, overhead cams have a holding tool but this one does not. I included the procedure. I suspect you are having an issue on Step 3 where it says to install the belt so that there is no looseness on the tension side. If this is not done then the cams will move.

Look over the process and let me know if you have questions. Thanks

Which diagram should I be looking at? I've had this belt off and back on five times today and I don't see anyway of keeping these from moving if but just one tooth enough to mess things up.

He posted the entire procedure for replacing the belt.

You have already done that procedure. The marks are the same as I posted on out other question.

Check with NAPA, advanced, AutoZone and Pep Boys for the tool.

Yes I know, I don't know why he felt I needed to refer to the photos. I know the problem I just need the tool to hold these gears from moving it's just that simple.
For some reason one side wants to move before I get everything lined up and locked down.

That is because there is too much slack in the belt. With the tensioner installed. there should be no slack at all.

Guys,

There is no tool. I posted the entire procedure so you can follow it in the event you need it.

Here is a video on how to do it: You can try to find a tool if you want but I doubt one exists because the service manual doesn't tell you to use one and I have never seen anyone use one.

There's no slack in the belt now. but I'm still of a tooth off and every time I take the tension out of the belt and try to turn the cam back or forward a tooth it's not loose enough. so I take the whole belt back off and right back to square one. I'm going to Harbor Freight and try to find the right kind of tool to fit this thing I don't have a clue what I'm looking at. But have no help I mean physically help to hold a socket on it while I do the belt

You can slide the belt forward of the gear and move it the tooth and slide it back on.

That's something I watched this same video four times today. And you see how he has two ratchets one on each cam gear? I suspect there is a trick to it or someone held the ratchets while he installs the belt I don't remember. But there's also a video of a guy using the tool I'm talking about in a demo of a dual cam motor timing belt change. I'll go back watch the video again maybe I missed something but this has been a nightmare. Two more hands I could do it.

Correct. He is using two ratchets so he can hold it in place while he is installing the belt. They flash on the screen to wedge a screwdriver behind the sprocket to hold it in place. I have seen this done and they damaged the backing plate so be careful if you are going to do it. Each time I do it, I do have someone holding it so I get your pain trying to do it by yourself.

Yes, I made the mistake of putting a wedge of wood in front the gears and like to have never got them out. I have been bent over this thing like ten hours. And it starts but when I turn it off and align the timing by hand and a ratchet on the crank when I rotate by hand back to the marks it's usually the intake camshaft is out by a tooth. Every time so it's hard starting.

Great job thank you again and I will let you know how things go today.
I'm going to try again and if I have no luck I'll look for the cam tool. Have a great day.. JC

I got a question for you.
When bringing your cam gears upon the backing plate marks if you aren't very careful the gear will jump forward past the mark and you hear a loud click. Why is that? I'm guessing it's an indication the valve or valves have either opened or closed. And when your marks are aligned properly in what position are the valves under the cylinder? My son is coming all the way across the state from East coast today to hold the ratchet for me. I hated to ask him to do that but I live deep in the country pretty isolated so it's really my only option. I really hope this works and that this is the problem. It ran fine when I parked it and decided to change the belt. The bad thing is the belt looked fine but I didn't like the looks of the tensioner. Okay, thank you.

Yes, the clicking is the movement of the valves. It will not do it when it is spot on alignment.

Gotcha just wanted to make sure. Got everything lined up perfect waiting on my son .. everything has to be just perfect I can see that now there's no room for error at all, but I think with another pair of hands I'll be okay.
I rebuilt my Nissan hard body last year whole engine with no trouble.

Hello Roy, I got the timing right finally, starting up like it should. what I had to do was loosen the belt enough to turn the crankshaft back to 12 o'clock position and that made the difference. But I've really got major issues now. I don't know how this happened but the car was at an idle and low and behold the belt jumped off. So I don't have to say anymore because you know the results. Heads re-manufactured is $800.00. Not going go there. do you have any idea what it cost to replace the valves that are bent ? Because the rest of the head should be fine being it didn't run hot. Thanks. JC

Wow. I think what happened was a little antifreeze ran down the block from the thermostat housing or where it goes. It was not on the motor yet and of course it's very slippery. So I suspect it ran down onto the crankshaft gear and caused the belt to run off the pulley. Is there anything a person can use to clean that stuff off?
I'm going to put another belt on it today and see if it will start at all. If not I'll pull the head maybe replace the bent valves. And hope their not all bent.
I thank you for all your help. JC Hope you have a good week.

Did you have the harmonic balancer on when you started the engine?

Just wanted to update you on the timing belt on the Kia. No damages were done when the belt came off due to the antifreeze getting on the pulley.
I put a new belt on this morning. And started right up multiple times. All glory to the Lord. And the great mechanics at 2CarPros.com. Thanks again.

Okay, that's why it flew off not the coolant.

The belt will try to move forward when running it with the balancer.

So I started it twice this morning back to back no problems so should I put the balancer back on before starting it again I would think so after what you told me. So I just learned a very important piece of information this morning. Thank you I will start putting the balancer back on. What's the odds of no damages in this situation Roy?

Do a compression test to verify. You need around 130-150 on all cylinders.

Okay, I'll probably put everything concerning the timing belt back together. Because this new project is all top end only. But I do agree it's a good idea that way I know exactly what I got.. It may be I need to trade it in. I don't think I've got a rering and new bearings in me.. To much work. But then again just taking that head off is too much I think for me that is. Thanks. JC

You think so? I wish you were local mobile mechanics or any mechanic.
Around here are expensive. But then again you guys earn every penny that's
fact. I got a price on fixing this several months ago at around 700 dollars. At
The time I wasn't aware of dual cam situation. I have done chains in the past and belts and never had this much
Difficulty. So I figured I'd save myself some money and give me a project to
stay busy too. But had I known this I
think I would have given him the job.

A used motor would cost about $3,000.00 to install.

Can you buy a new car for $3,000.00 ? That is almost sales tax on a new car today.
