thank you for your response. I did take the car to the mechanic today and showed him your responses. He said that he too believed the starting problem was the security and is ordering a kit to fix it. He said the clicking was more than likely the emergency flashers as he has had to change several on that car model. Thanks to both of you for your help. I will recommend this site to anyone I know who has car questions.
You are most welcome. Visit us often, and tell your friends.

Next time it refuses to start don't wait for it to make up its mind-do below immediately to determine if its fuel or spark problem
Get a helper disconnect a sparkplug wire or 2 and ground it to the engine atleast 3/16 away from ground-have helper crank engine over-do you have a snapping blue spark? If so-you have a fuel related problem, Do you hear the fuel pump come On when you turn key on? If not check fuel pump fuse and fuel pump relay if so, check the fuel pressure to rule out the fuel filter/fuel pump/pressure regulator and listen to the injector/s are they pulsing or hook up a noid light. No snapping blue spark continue to troubleshoot the ignition system-power input to the coil/coil packs, coil's resistances, cap and rotor, distributor pick-up coil, ignition control module, cam and crank sensors and computer Note: If it doesn't apply disregard it and keep testing

Hi,
Sometimes I will be driving down the road & the car will just die with no indications what so ever, it also does not want to start sometimes. As soon as you hear the fuel pump humming it will fire right up. There are no codes coming up & we have replaced the fuel pump & ignition switch & it still has the same problems. Someone has told us to replace the pcm but it is rather pricey & was wondering if it could possibly be something else before I go spending to much more money trying to figure this out. It seems like it happens when my car sits at idol for at least 45 minutes or so, not sure if its just a coinsidance but could it be something overheating? Would appreciate any kind of advice you can give.

you need to see what is missing when it wont start. check fuel pressure first.
what kind of pump did you use???

A few weeks ago my car started having the dash and radio power blink on and off.
Then one day all the idiot lights came on and it died.
It wont even click when I try to start it unless I use my jumper box.
Then it clicks, but that is all.
When I try to jump it my jumper box gets hot, so I suspect a short, possibly in the key ignition system.

Check the positive wires going to the starter and the one going to the fuse box. If it has that much short check around the interior fuses to see if any wires get warm or hot. also the wire that goes to the starter, may have rubbed against the exhaust or other sharp metal and shorted out.

I checked the starter wires as you suggested, but none show any signs of overheating or shorting out.
I tried turning on the power, but now not even the dome light works, and that is while using my jumper box (which is no longer getting hot).
Is there a master fuse anywhere that could affect the whole car?
Or do you think it is something else (like maybe the key ignition system)?

Hello I have a 2003 Pontiac Grand AM V6 GT Coupe that will not start and the security light inside keeps blink when trying to start the car, can you help us with this? We think it may be electrical, because my husband can fix, he just need to know what to do. All the lights come when trying to start the car, but it will not turn over, and it's been about a 1year since we put the starter on, so it not that.

try this.
30 MINUTE LEARN PROCEDURE
TOOLS REQUIRED
None
Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
Attempt to start the engine, then release the key to ON (vehicle will not start).
Observe the SECURITY telltale, after approximately 10 minutes the telltale will turn OFF.
Turn OFF the ignition, and wait 5 seconds .
Repeat steps 1 through 4 two more times for a total of 3 cycles/30 minutes (the vehicle is now ready to relearn the Passlock(tm) Sensor Data Code and/or passwords on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK).
Start the engine (the vehicle has now learned the Passlock(tm) Sensor Data Code and/or password). IMPORTANT: The vehicle learns the Passlock(tm) Sensor Data Code and/or password on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK. You must turn the ignition OFF before attempting to start the vehicle.
With a scan tool, clear any DTCs if needed (history DTCs will self clear after 100 ignition cycles).

I need you to check something. Have a helper turn the key to the start position while you check for power to the smaller wire on the starter. You should get 12+ volts. Let me know what you find.

my car wouldn't start after I stopped at a store for about five minutes. it was running fine before that. I had it towed home and since then i've check for spark at the plug, and that's good. the relay is good and the fuses are good.

If it cranks good but won't start, have a helper crank it while you check for spark at the plugs. If you spark everywhere, use a gage and check fuel pressure. Any applicable trouble codes? What is litre size of engine?

It has a 3.4 liter. No trouble codes
