It looks similar, but the tensioner is lower and is bolted to what looks like a small shock absorber.

Here is a diagram that will help you replace the serpentine belt.

https://www.2carpros.com/diagrams/dodge/stratus/2002

The 2.4L in the Stratus coupe has one belt for the water pump and alternator and a second belt for the AC and / or power steering. The first one uses a spring-loaded tensioner pulley so no adjustment is needed.

The Stratus sedan has a belt for the AC and alternator, and a second one for the power steering.

For the belts without spring-loaded tensioners, you need a scanner with a microphone attachment, then you pluck the belt. Tension is adjusted until you get the belt to vibrate at the specified frequency, but they don't tell you how to make the adjustments. I know that information is in the paper service manual.

Please let me know if you need anything else to get the problem fixed.

I have a Dodge Stratus RT 2001 with a Mitsubishi engine. The serpentine belt fell off and I need a diagram or video to show how to replace it.I think a spring or something may have fell off but am not sure if there is a spring on it or not but it's too loose and wondering what we are doing wrong. There is no diagram under the hood to show how to replace it. Any help would be deeply appreciated. Didn't receive a manual with my car either.Any help we can get, or a place to find a instructions on how to replace the belt would be appreciated. Thanks so much. Debbie Arnold

The info below is for a stratus sedan. If you have two different belts, have to remove tension from power steering pump and or alternator.

You will need a wrench or ratchet (based on which your vehicle needs). Look at the tensioner and you will see that it is movable. Using a wrench, move the tensioner away from the belt until it is loose enough to remove.

Raise vehicle and remove passenger side wheel. Remove splash shield. Locate power steering pulley (towards the firewall). On the back side of the pulley towards the timing cover, locate and loosen power steering pivot and lock bolts. Use 1/2" wrench to loosen the tension. Remove belt

First you have to remove the power steering belt.

To do this, there are three bolts to loosen:

1. Pivot bolt (at top of pump)

2. (you have to raise the vehicle and remove the tire and wheel/splash shield to get access to these bolts)

Loosen the lock bolt at front/bottom of pump and lock bolt at back/bottom of pump.

3. Then you can slide the pump down to loosen the belt.

Next there's a black idler pulley for the serpentine belt. You loosen the bolt directly in the center. Then on the side of the pulley is a long adjusting bolt. You must loosen this until the pulley releases it's tension on the serpentine belt.

You can install the new belts in reverse order.

Three bolts to loosen. First is the pivot bolt from on top. It's just above and forward of the pulley. From underneath, remove the splash shield, then there's a lock bolt just forward of and below the pulley, and one right behind that bolt. Both of those are in slots to allow for adjustment.

There's a 1/2" square hole right above the lock bolt under the pulley to use a 1/2" breaker bar to tighten the new belt.

Did anyone figure out how to bypass AC on 2001 Stratus? What is the length of the belt or part number?

You need to measure for the belt length. Take that length to a parts store and they should be able to get the right size belt. Remember, with the belt off, the tensionier is fully extended. You need to have someone hold tension on it when measuring.

Thanks for your reply. It was towed into the shop where mechanic will not bother to measure it but offering AC compressor, evap. and condenser. coils replaced at $1,800.00 plus. If I can supply the belt, I might be able to convince him to install it. That is why I posted this hoping that someone know the belt number or measurement. Otherwise, we have to tow the car to another shop.

just had to same problem recently. the belt size is 43" 6-groove. you may have to adjust alternator positioning to get belt nice and snug. this shorter belt size can be found at most auto parts stores. i think i picked mine up for $10.00 pretty cheap considering what the alternative costs. a new compressor and OEM size belt will run hundreds more. hope this is helpful to someone in the future!

Four cylinder front wheel drive automatic 78,000 miles.

Belt broke. cannot locate the tension-er. What looks like it should be the tension-er will not budge. I may be on the wrong pulley. Do I need a special tool or what and where is the cotton-picking thing?

1. Raise vehicle on hoist. 2. Remove right front wheel and belt splash shield. 3. Insert a 3/8" drive breaker bar into the square opening of the belt tension-er pivot bracket. Page 1 of 1 CAUTION:Avoid excessive force to over compress belt tensioner. This may result in damage to the belt tensioner. 4.Gently apply a force to rotate belt tensioner clockwise until the belt tensioner bottoms out and the belt can be removed from pulleys. See Fig. 11 and Fig. 12. 5.Remove belt. 6.Gently release tensioner.

I ran into the same issue with the AC compressor locking up on me on a 2004 2.7 liter model when I was out of town with limited tools. I tried unplugging the connector wire to disengage the clutch but the inside of the compressor had already seized and would not budge.

I was able to bypass the AC compressor as shown in the diagram above on the 2.7l with a 13/16" x 43-3/4"belt. Master Pro part number K060431.

i'm trying to replace serpentine belt, dont understand how to access the tensioner it's really buried , i found one nut on the front of it, loosened it, didn't do much, is there another one that has to be loosened?

To remove the belt, you need to move the tensioner away from the belt. It is spring loaded and hinges at its mount. You don't remove any bolts to do this. If access is an issue, remove the inner plastic panel inside the passenger side wheel well to access the side of the engine.

I'm not sure which one you have, but some do require that you loosen the alternator and there is an adjustment screw to loosen and tighten the belt. What looks like a tensioner pulley may in fact be an idler pulley. For some reason I can't open my diagrams to see and confirm what you are dealing with.

yes, now that you mention it , the pulley does look like an idler pulley, Do all cars have a tension pully? i'm gonna have to pass this job on to a better mechanic, the other problem is that the tensioner on the alternator, is rusted and i think it's gonna break,, i sprayed w d 40 on it to no avail. they may have to heat it up.

there is only the alternator for a tensioner. There is a tension pully but it doesn't have any adjustment or spring tension. Remove the alternator guard by taking out two bolts. Loosen the pivot nut on the front of the alternator and loosen the adjusting bolt on the side of the alternator until the alternator is all the way back towards the engine. Slip the new belt on the alternator pulley, A/C pulley (if you have A/C) and craqnk pully, pay attention to the belt routing as indicated on the sticker on the hood! Slip on the idler pulley last and it will go right on. If your belt is too loose chances are you aren't following the correct belt routing. If you can't get the belt on you are not putting the idler on last.
