i got the back pressure tester today and checked the front sensor and it wouldnt register until about 3000 rpm, then barely move. i talked to a guy at work to use his scanner to check missfires. hope to get that done. told him how my scanner shows about 20 things on the operating data when its running. then i put it in my ls1 with the 4 cyl. and read it and get 56 things to come up. and the 99 sl1 i have shows about 56 with the 1.9 single cam. why would it read more things from those cars than the ls2. he thinks it has a computer problem. whats your take on that and how else should i be checking the back pressure. i thought the front one would test the whole system at once? thanks

If the car shifts good and you don't have to let up on the gas to shift that is good.If you only test the back pressure at the front manifold that will only tell you if that pre cat is clogged and if the lower cat is clogged. But won't tell you if the rear pre cat is clogged because you can only see that by testing the pressure right off that manifold. The pressure on the front one sounds normal since you have the gauge now i would test the rear one too.As far as the scan tool not showing very many line's of data i really have never used a aftermarket scanner on the L model saturn's i have only used the Tech2 with the factory software the same scanner that all the gm dealers use.It is a lot more advanced then the generic obd2 scanners the diyer's use.As far as saying you have a bad ecm because of the lack of data lines i wouldn't jump to that conclusion all the ecms i have replaced the engine didn't run the tech2 wouldn't link up to the ecm other running issue's etc. Also you can still have bad cats and setting those cat code's you have even though it's not showing a clogged cat.I would reset the cat code's and see if those cat code's come back also check the other manifold back pressure. So you have a miss fire with no code's?Another thing those early v6 L model engine's are known for are bad timing belt tenisors i have seen them just let the belt go completely loose.Or just loose enough to jump a tooth and cause a power loss or a miss fire.

the car is still a little slow shifting when cold. i thought doing the front maybe would tell me the whole system. i will check the back one then. when i put the tester in the light went out and when i put the sesor back in it stayed out. dont think i got one for the sensor being unhooked. it just had a new belt about 10,000 ago. my scanner is a auto xray 6000. im only getting about half the info as the other cars.

Your comparing a 99 S model saturn then a 4cyl L model to a 6cyl L model.Like i said i have never hooked up a generic code reader to a L i have on a S model and i think it had like 108 lines of data i have a actron scanner. As far as the belt being replaced 10,000 miles ago was the timing belt tenisor replaced also?Because the belt's aren't the problem the tenisor's are and they can fail with a new belt or old one.Have you had a transmission shop perform a line pressure test on the transmission yet?You could have a pressure issue those transmission's are known for line pressure solenoid issue's.

If you have low pressure high pressure etc i have seen the transmissions destroy themselves inside. So was there any debris in the transmission pan?

didnt find anything on belt tensioner. sticker on breather cover says 186,000. looked like the trans filter was changed roughly 40,000 ago. it had code p0742 back at 163,000. complaint of bad gas milage at 68,000. changed mass air flow. it really isnt good now either. wished it was better.

i checked the back the back side top hole. the needle didnt move until about 3000 rpm again. so must be good. the end of the sensors were real light colored, so should be running pretty clean. the light has not been back on since i checked the front. where is the ecm on this car. if i could get a used one cheap enough i might be willing to try one just to see what it does. should have good weather to go parts chasing. thanks

If you want
to try a ecm thats your choice i wouldnt go down that road. Its on the intake manifold drivers side there are reverse torx bolts holding it on with two connectors going to it.

The transmission computer is under the cowl at the base of the windshield passenger side and the ecm is on the intake manifold on the drivers side.

yesterday i checked the oil and it is over full. the water is not low, and its not foamy. filled up with gas and got 23 mpg. i had oily looking stuff in the tube by the mass air flow sensor. that was not there about 3 weeks ago because i changed it. going to change the oil then watch it. its been running good, not like its been pouring gas in.

the light came on in the car again. the 421 code. i had the guy at work use the scanner. it had no misfires.no back pressure and no leaks. always seems to run good when light comes on. he said dont worry about that code. just dont like the light being on. he had all the info from the car . so i guess for some reason my scanner cant get all the info from the car.

I had a feeling it was probably your scanner just not showing the lines of data that's why i said i wouldn't go down the road of replacing ecm because of that.As far as a low effecientcy cat you can drive it like that you will just have to take care of that before your smog is due.Have you ran thru the trouble tree to see if it was a bad cat?

i had the 421 code so that should be the front bank. i have no misfires. i dont know of any leaks. if a sensor is bad it should give me a code? the dia gram wont load on my computer right now. so it should be a bad sensor front bank or a bad cat? we dont have smog tests here.

Yeah you look for leaks and that the front o2 sensor is working correctly it will usually set a code if it isn't.Also look for leaks if there isn't and no miss fire's then bad cat.If you don't have smog checks then there really isn't any worries there.Only problem is the light will stay on and you won't know if you get any other problems because the light will already be on.
