Had the alternator and battery tested while in the vehicle and they both tested fine. While it was being tested, the battery light never came on. When I left and went home, the bat light came back on, so I removed the alternator and had it tested by itself. It tested OK. Is the only thing that could be wrong is the computer? I didn't know Dodge used the ECM as the voltage regulator instead of one in the alternator. I'm about out of things to try..... Thanks for the help.

Yes your computer controls the alternator when the battery light is on you need to take a multimeter and see what the voltage at the battery is.That way you can tell if it's a charging issue or a faulty battery light circuit.

You could also take the vehicle to a auto parts store and have them check your alternator while in the car they could tell you if something is wrong.

Or you could take it to a professional and have it checked correctly.

When driving in heavy stop and go traffic the battery light comes on and stays on until the next day. This happens more when using lights, Radio and other electrical components.

Hi:
You need to have the Alternator tested. Go to an Auto Zone or some other nationally recognized parts store and have it load tested. Try to do it when the light is on.

Let me know what you find.

Battery light keeps coming on, even with a new battery. Had the alternator checked on the machine, it tested fine. Battery light still on, car feels like it is having to work hard to run. Also sometimes won't shift easily. Will pull off on side of road, restart car, then it seems to be fine. Will shift, no problem.

If the check engine light is on, have the computer scanned to identify if there are trouble codes stored. As far as the alt, if the battery is going dead or is weak as a result of the alt not properly charging, it can cause all sorts of problems. Since they checked the alt, have them check the fuseable link between the alt and battery to make sure it is good.

I own a 99 Dodge Grand Caravan Sport model with power everything, mileage 99500. Two months ago the battery light came on and the transmission jumped to low gear while driving at highway speed. I limped the vehicle to the shoulder and shut it down. When I tried to restart the van, the battery was dead. Took the van to a trusted transmission guy and he told me the problem was electrical, that when the alternator is shot it can cause this problem. Fine, I tested and replaced both the battery and alternator and everything was fine. Three days ago the battery light came on again. This time the car ran fine and when I shut it off and restarted it the battery light was off. Now the light comes on within a few minutes of driving. Any help would be graetly appreciated.

you did not say how long ago this happened or if the altenator was new or a rebuild. how old is the battery and why did you take it to a trans shop? does the van run ok with the light on, if so maybe the codes need to be cleared. you have a lot of miles on the van, could be a bad ground. hell my 99 van only has 37000 on it and it's something new about every four months. chrysler products are JUNK!

The Battery and altenator are both new. I took it to the trans shop because the trans dropped to neutral at hwy speed. Once the van slowed down I had 1st gear and could pull it over. The battery and alt were tested and the battery was bad. After I put the new battry in, the same thing kept happeneing and I retested the alt ant it was bad. The old battery and alt were only three years old at the time. Now it has been 2-3 months since I replaced the battery and alt and the batt light is comimg on again like it did 2-3 months ago.

Maybe the a/c threw the belt, that would take out the water pump(temp light) and alternator(check battery warning light). See if the belt is there. ok 3.3L or 3.8L only.

I had a screw snap off from the a/c pump which made the belt come off. I know that I need to replace the screw and belt put back on. Why would the battery light come on when it hasn't been driven except to be moved out of the way? Would it do this cause the belt is not on at this time? need an answer fast please, The van will be getting fixed on Thursday the 10th of June 2010.

Battery light coming On means the alternator is not producing an output to recondition the battery-get the alternator load tested.

Thank you for your response. Alternator was tested and was okay. I just went outside to start it and now the battery light and ABS light are both off. Does that seem odd. He just replaced the belt this morning and both lights were still on after replacing it.

Here is the long storry: One day I forgot my head ligts on and the battery drained - called a tow truck - jump started the car, went home.

Couple of weeks later the car would not start - no power, out of the blue. Jump started the car again. While going home, stuck in traffic, the battery light came on, a few minutes lated tha car stopped, could not start again.

Called a tow truck, send tha car to a Crhyseler daler, thay said - nothing to worry about, just a loose battery cable. They said checked the battery everything was fine.

Anyway the car was in my garage. I did not drive it for 3-4 weeks and the battery drained again. Tried to jump start - with a lot of attempts, finally managed.

I left the car to idle for 30 minutes to charge the battery. Now the battery light is on again. The batery not charged. My instruments light flicker.

My battery is 2 years old. This is during the summer, so it is not frozen or anything.

What could be the problem?

Thanks in advance.

It sure sounds like an alternater problem to me. You need to be able to check that the output is proper, there are independent shops that can help you ir you can't do it.

I got a 1997 Dodge Caravan. Took the van to autozone had the van checked and he said the alternator is bad. I remove the alt. took it to autozone and had them bench test it and it passed twice. I left and went to kragen and same thing passed twice. But the odd thing was no one can tell me if it putting out any volts. So i popped the alt. back in the van charged the battery. started fine battery light was off then suddenly the van goes dead. I removed the battery took it to pepboys (battery was bad)and had it replaced under warranty. popped everything back together. yaahoo???? well the van went dead. what is the problem with the van? Alt. has passed a bench test what is next?

My battery light in my 97 Dodge Caravan came on back in July for 3 days and then all of a sudden went off and my van has been running fine other than a few other problems that I have since fixed. My question is why would it keep doing that? I took it to three different part stores and they checked it back in July and said that my battery and alternator needed replacing and then it starting working fine. Should I just keep driving it and see if the problem stops or should I take it back to the shops and have them test it again. I did however, take it back when the light went off and it was working properly then. What should I do and what is the problem?

I'd do some testing, when the problem is ongoing. If there was a code, what the actual code number? You may be able to check mil codes yourself. To check for codes, try cycling the ignition switch, you just turn the key till the dash lites come on, no further, no crank, cycle the key on--off, on---off, on, then the mil starts flashing, you count the flashes to get the codes. Your looking for two digit codes.

If you have a digital multimeter and want to check the charging system, we can help you with that. Some people want no part of testing, that's up to you. I can't diagnose without testing. Let us know.

My husband was driving it and the battery light came on and then the radio lost power. When he got home he checked the altenator and it was bad so we bought a new one but the battery light is still on and the van will drive for a while and then it will lose power as though the battery is dead. We went to the auto parts store and had them test the battery and they said that the battery was good. What else could be causing my van and battery to die?

Check for power at the power supply th=o the alternator. It should be hot, 12 volts.(the 10 MM bolt with the big red wire) if not check the fuses for a blown fuse. if it is good have the alternator checked to see if you have a defective alternator. it should be only one of the two but if not let me know

This is an extremely common problem caused by worn brushes inside the alternator. On some Chrysler engines the assembly can be replaced without removing the alternator from the engine, but you need room to get the rear cover off. The brush assembly costs around ten bucks, but you might not find it at an auto parts store. Starter and generator rebuilders have them.

The brushes make intermittent contact at high mileage. The first issue is charging system testing has to be done while the problem is occurring, otherwise everything will test fine. To verify this, measure the two voltages on the two smaller terminals on the back of the alternator, but this must be done while the engine is running. One will have full battery voltage. The other one is supposed to have less, but not 0 volts. When one of the brushes is not making contact, you WILL find 0 volts on that second terminal.
