temperature gauge is not working

when i drive the car the temp gauge goes all the way over but engin is not hot. it shows normal for about 5 miles of driving. could this be a cracked head or a blown head gasket

I would make sure that the coolant temp is with in normal operating range, and if so start looking at a faulty sender or gauge.
