transfer case not working

Check the wiring harness at the actuator for breaks or damage. Also, the check the plug.

1998 Chevy Truck V8 Four Wheel Drive Automatic

the four wheel drive won't shift on the go. It has the push button on the dash for 4 lo, 4 hi and 2.
the only way to get it into 4 wheel is to come to a complete stop put it in neutral push 4 lo first you can hear it engage right away then go to 4 hi which you can also hear right away. To go back to 2 wh drive you have to again come to a complete stop put it in neutral and push the 2 wh drive button. It then turns the 2 wh button solid for a few seconds then the light gos out and the 4 hi button starts blinking and never stops.
So far I have replaced 2 switches on the transfercase and one in the dash. None of them have made a difference.

Any ideas?

Coming to a complete stop and being in neutral would be the norm any time you're going in, or out of 4 lo. Here is the description of a range shift:
Range Shifts
The range shifts are the shifts between the HI and the LO ranges.
• 2HI to 4LO

• 4HI to 4LO

• 4LO to 4HI

• 4LO to 2HI

A range shift can only be made with the automatic transmission in neutral or with the manual transmission clutch fully depressed. The shift occurs when the vehicle speed is below three miles per hour.
Whenever a shift into 4LO is initiated, the 4LO shift select button blinks. The 4LO shift select button will continue to blink until the shift is completed mechanically or until 30 seconds elapses. The 4LO shift select button must be on and not blinking prior to shifting the transmission into gear or releasing the clutch pedal.

If a range shift is initiated when the transmission is engaged or the vehicle speed is above 3 mph, the 4LO shift select button will blink for 30 seconds and no range shift actually occurs, the TCCM will default and position the transfer case into 4HI.

Here is the description of a mode shift:
Mode Shifts
The mode shifts are shifts from 2HI to 4HI and 4HI to 2HI. A mode shift can be accomplished in any gear position and at any vehicle speed. If the system is in 2HI, the driver can shift into 4HI merely by pressing the 4HI shift select button. The 4HI button will blink status whenever a 2HI or 4HI shift is initiated and will continue to blink until the TCCM completes the shift. After the shift into 4HI is accomplished, the 4HI status lamp remains lit to indicate that the system is in 4HI.

There is a difference between when the TCCM sends voltage signals in order to engage a four wheel drive shift and when the vehicle is truly in four wheel drive. The transfer case can be shifted into 4HI and the front axle may not be engaged.

The driver can shift from 4HI back to 2HI by pressing the 2HI shift select button. The 2HI shift select button blinks until the shift to 2HI is complete. The 2HI shift select button will remain on once the shift is mechanically complete.


Does this transfer case select switch have an auto 4WD position, or is it just straight selectable.

Next would be to check for codes. On a straight selectable o-auto case, you ground pin 13 at the data connector under the dash. I dont have an illustration of which pin that is, but the wire color is orange. The lights on the switch should flash. You are only going to have a choice of 4 codes. Here is the procedure to further clarify.
Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Displaying
The transfer case shift control module is equipped with the ability to store diagnostic information, which is useful to a technician in the event of module, component or wiring failures. This information can be retrieved from the transfer case shift control module by way of flash codes, which are displayed on the three transfer case shift control switch buttons. These buttons are located on the instrument panel to the right of the steering wheel Before obtaining DTCs, perform the following transfer case control module (TCCM) Self-Test.

TCCM Self-Test
Observe the transfer case shift control switch indicators while turning the ignition switch to RUN. A properly operating system will flash all indicators and then will return to the current gear. If the system is operating normally, then proceed to Displaying Codes.
If the TCCM failed the Self-Test, then test the following circuits.
• Battery Positive Voltage (40 and 1640), and Ignition 3 Voltage for battery voltage

• Ground Circuit for ground

• Diagnostic enable circuit for an open or high resistance

• Transfer case shift control switch connector

If the above circuits are normal but the TCCM still fails the Self-Test, replace the TCCM. Refer to Transfer Case Shift Control Module Replacement .
DTC Displaying
Turn OFF the ignition for 10 seconds.
Connect PIN 13 on the data link cable (DLC) to a ground. The DLC is located in the cab under the instrument panel on the driver's side.
Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
Observe the transfer case shift control switch select buttons for flashing codes. Refer to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List .
Important: If the transfer case shift control switch buttons all blink only once and then stop, no fault codes are stored in the transfer case shift control module.

• When one DTC is stored in memory, that code will blink that number of times followed by a 3 second pause and then repeat.

• If more than one code is stored, the first code will blink, followed by a 3 second pause and then the second code will blink.

• This sequence will continue until PIN 13 on the DLC is no longer grounded.

• If the TCCM will not communicate the presence or absence of DTCs, test the above circuits in Self-Test Step 2. If the circuits are complete, then replace the TCCM. Refer to Transfer Case Shift Control Module Replacement .

is the tccm located on the left side of transfer case beside the front drive shaft?

if so it looks like there is 2 parts to it. there is the part were the plug goes and then there is a larger plate that is bolted on.

The TCCM should be in under the dash. Near the steering column. I don't have any illustrations of it. I can give you wire colors if it will help.

I talked to the dealership about a price on the TCCM. They didn't know if i was talking about the Module on the transfercase itself or if I meant the Transfer Case "Service" Control Module. Which is located under the dash left of the steering column.

I uploaded some pictures that I got from the dealership and they circled the parts on the transfer case and under the dash. Which one?

I don't know what they are describing on the transfer case itself, the only component on the case is the encoder motor. The TCCM that I am describing is under the dash near the steering column, that is for selectable FWD. In fact automatic transfer case shift control module is shown in the same place. I did not see any links to pictures.

i shift into 4 wheel drive lights are on, on the floor shifter but wheels not engaging

Check vacuum supply to front axle. If this is an electric shift 4wd, check to make sure the actuator is getting power.

Put a socket in it.

1997 Chevy Truck V8 Four Wheel Drive Automatic 97000 miles

We live in Southern Utah and spend most of this part of the season driving in 4 wheel drive. I've explained to my wife SEVERAL TIMES that when she gets on roads with good traction to disengage the 4 wheel drive. She recently got on the freeway and drove 25 miles at 80 mph in 4 wheel drive... The 4 wheel drive will no longer engage. The button on the dash to engage the 4 wheel drive flashes but won't go solid green indicating its locked. The truck operates correctly in 2 wheel drive. The truck is equiped with standard auto hubs on the front axle. Can you tell me where I need to start looking? Oh I also forgot, this is all my fault as I should have reminded her

her driving in 4 shouldn't cause this problem, first turn the ignition on with the truck off and the door open and listen when pushing the button to see if the transfer case is shifting into 4 its a kind of loud click from the t-case area, if you hear that, then check into the switch in the front diff, it is on the passenger side of the front differential, I have hade that go out several times. if you don't hear the click from the tcase, then look into that solinoid, also double check that ice isn't built up around the tcase shift arms, I have also had that happen on a kinda warm i.e. lower30s day when the roads are slushy

i have 1996 chevy blaser and it is a 4x4 with the manule shifter not the electrical shifter for the 4x4 function. when u ingage the 4x4 the transfure case ingages but the front end will not ingage the front difrental. any help it much apreshated.

Any noises? if not you must have a broken fork...if yes then check the u-joint..

88 chevy 3500 wont go into 4 wd

4 wheel drive actuator on front differental may be faulty.it threads into passenger side of the pumkin.unplug the electrical connector.shift into 4 wheel and test connector with test light 1 side should be hot whith key on.the actuator is 1 1/4 wrench.easy to change. if you have power change it, if no power check 4 wheel fuse in fuse box

I can't remove the ignition key? Also truck will not go into park?

since the key is stuckin the tumbler,now is the time to replace it. The top of the steering column has to come apart to do this.Beware of the air bag .

This could be a problem with the shifter not quite moving to right place when placed in park to cause the key locking solenoid to release the key.

There are several parts that could be causing that, disassembly to find the problem is probably req'd

After driving highway speed 30-45 minutes, i shut the truck off, it will struggle to restart?

struggle as in crank for a long time or the engine cranks but real slow?

cranks very slow: like it dosen't have enough juice to start. It only does it when the truck has been running speed for awhile. Battery is new, all cables are tight.

Have you checked for power to the 4wd actuator on the transfer case?

These are the codes that showed up for my 2002 Chevy Silverado: p0785, p0758, p1860, p0740, and p0753. Can you direct me in a direction to start at? Also my gas hand, speedometer, cluster lights, are not working .

those are all transmission codes, take it toa trans shop. also check to make sure your battery is good as that may be the cause of your gauges not working.

Thanks, I have replaced the battery and transmission shop said it was the ignition switch in the steering column so I bought a new one...it worked good for a couple months but here I am again with same problems.?.

it may be a bad connection at the trans or broken wire, this would need to be physically looked at for repair

Check and see if you have power to, and across IGN 0 fuse in the left fuse block. If you do, clear the codes and see if the condition still exists. If you do not, replace the ignition switch. It supplies power to IGN 0 fuse, and subsequently all the solenoids in the transmission.

when start the engine up and put the gear shift lever in first and try to engage the four wheel drive shift lever the truck will not move and when trying to engage the four wheel drive shift lever it make a noise like it is hard to engage it Just like the four wheel drive shift lever not going into gear what is causing the truck not to move is it the tranmission are the differential (rear end)?

Where is the Transfer sw. and the 4WD Indicator light, sw, located?

if you don't have electric switching you don't have the light. or it in the dash.
