I have found a picture of the Ford computer that shows which chip is the DIS controller in the EECV computer. Both V6 and V8 use the same system.

SUCCESS!!! The crank sensor is what caused the problem. You have to be a contortionist to get it, but other than that it was fairly simple. $17.59 for the part versus big money for a computer!! Thanks so much for your help. This is a kick ass web site!!!

When you turn key to run do you hear the fuel pump come On ? If so check the fuel pressure if not check fuel pump fuse and relay then report back with some results

when you first turn the ignition key to on position .. you should hear a 10/15 second slight buzz noise while sitting in the drivers seat with no other noise on (radio/heaters) ??? the fuse and relay are in the underhood power distribution box at the rear on right hand side near firewall/sidewall fuse #3 also check condition or replace relay (in diagram) if you don't here the noise .. if this doesn't work .. it may have burn't out the pump when you ran out of gas ? if you are hearing the "buzz" you may have to pump gas through for a little while before it fires up ?? then check the pressure

Have you tried replacing the fuel pump relay? Also, even though you are getting some fuel to come out, are you sure there is enough pressure to run the engine?

Here is a how to for checking fuel pressure. It has the directions and a video. You will need a fuel pressure gauge. Most parts stores will lend or rent them to you.

Let me know if it helps,
Joe

We have owned a Ford Explorer 97 plate for 16 years now and had the same problem recently, the engine would crank but not start. We found out that the issue was the crank sensor covered in carbon. A blast from a can of carbon cleaner cleared the magnet on the crank sensor of all the carbon and with one turn of the key she started first time. Hope this helps.
