In your vehicle, you have a relay called an EEC (electronic engine control). It is located in the relay box under the hood. It is common for them to act up and do exactly what you described. When the problem happens, switch the EEC with another relay with the same part number and see if it starts. If it does, just replace the relay. When you turn the key to the on position without cranking the engine over can you hear the fuel pump run in the tank for 5 seconds?

Please run down this guide and report back.

I don't know what happened, but I just got your reply. I'm glad you got it going. Let us know if you have questions in the future.

The car will turn over but not start. I replaced the battery yesterday, it started up right away. Went to start today and the car will turn over but not start. I do not here any power going to the fuel pump when the key is turned. I replaced the fuel relay and the eec power relay and still the same problem exists. Any thoughts

Is there any other way to check this I am by myself? Can I remove it and have it checked at local auto parts store? Would this have any effect on the fuel pump not getting power?

no it cant be tested off the vehicle. when you turn the key to run does the check engine light illuminate? have you tried spraying starter fluid into intake to see if it will start?

recheck your battery connections and fuse box under hood, i think we have a electrical problem. maybe a connector got loose when you replaced the battery.

let me ask you this, when I replaced the battery i replaced the neg cable conector, the old one was cracked almost all the way thru. I replaced the conector with a universal one- all i did was strip the four wires and clamp them all together, I rechecked them today thinking that may have been the problem, then as i stated earlier i replaced the fuel relay and the eec power relay. I had these symptoms years earlier when you the car wouldn't start and what was happening was the fuel pump wasn't getting power, when i turn on the key usually you hear the pump make a noise, I do not hear that noise at this time. the car turns over with no problem, just seems to not be getting fuel?

It sounds like a fuel related problem. Have you rechecked to see if it is getting spark now that is doesn't start?

What connector was partially connected? Where was it located? I have a similar problem. If fuel pump runs 3 sec, will start, if not, no start. Very intermittant.

on the ground able there is a connector going from the smaller wire. if the connection is not good and clean then it will cause many intermittent problems. yuo can cut out connector and wire in a splice connector and eliminate the connector

If it continues to get spark, then it has to be fuel related. You also mentioned you have to wait an hour after it dies for it to restart. During that time, do you have a good hot blue snapping spark and proper fuel pressure. If the spark is good, then it must be fuel related, or the crank sensor is cutting out and causing it to do this.

Yes, if the ignition switch is bad, loose, or out of adjustment, it could cause this.

The tumbler is may not be moving the ignition switch, but I would say the switch first first.

When I drive my car a short distance less then 5 miles or a long distance over 10 miles it is fine. But if I drive it between 5 to 10 miles then shut it off when I go to restart it it won't start. It trys turning over and all but it wont. After waiting about 5 minutes it will again start. Do you know whats wrong?

This is easy.
You properly have a dirty air intake.
Try this procedure.
Go to an autozone to purchase an inject and throttle cleaner. It usually comes with a spray bottle.
First, you need to uncrew and remove the intake duck (the rubber duck that connect between the air filter housing and the throttle valve housing).
Second, spray the bottle into the throttle valve housing, try to push the throttle open where the tension cable connect to the gas pedal. Spray in it and clean all the dirt and crease. Spray 4 or 5 times and clean it each time after you spay. All the dirt and crease you could not clean will be push down to the muffler. After you spray, clean the intake with a damp cloth carefully and put the rubber duck back together.
Finally, let it sits for half of an hour then start the engine. It will start and hola, the problem will never come back again.
I have the same problem as yours. Some one from other forum show me how to do this. The problem seems to be fixed since. Oh, and the vehicle seems to run smooth too.
Good luck,
Tony

i have a feeling its the spark plugs because if it was the starter or altinator it wouldnt be so random and it fires perfectly "when" it cranks ranging from 1 to 20 times so i think that rules out the fuel pump im just scared im gonna burn the starter out when its takin 20 turns of the key to make it crank..is it possible they were damaged from drivin through the water? if so i was looking for them under the hood but i couldnt see them

you say it wont crank sometimes and you have to keep turning it before it will crank?

if thats the case the starter isnt engaging and turning the engine the typical cranking noise before it fires.

is that true that there is no cranking untill you turn the key enough?

sounds like its a issue with the starter or relay.

apply direct battery power to the starter to see if it turns, or if you have to keep reapplying the power till it eventually cranks.
