Replaced headlights, checked relays, headlights come up and only passengers side works but when hi beam is switched it it goes off I tested relays and they work. I cannot locate the headlight sensor could that be the problem? Any ideas? Or locations??

Saturntech9, for pre1992 models there are not many system diagrams. You need to check the wiring under engine compartment.

kmelquist,
Perform the following test first.
At headlight connector, test the following wires for battery voltage with headlight switch turned on.

Lowbeams
Red/Yellow (right side)
Red/Blue

Highbeams
Orange (right side)
Orange/White.

If you have battery voltage with any lights not working, ground the Pink (right headlight) or Pink/Black (left headlight) and retest. If lights comes on, the light sensor or its wiring is faulty.

If battery voltage is not available under the lighting positions, you have a bad light switch.

Circuit is grounded via the light sensor.
Light switch is the multifunction switch that yuou turn the lights on.

Btw are the lights flipping open and remains open when lights failed?

Ok I'm back and did tests. Red/yellow and red/blue both have no voltage. The orange both have volts pushing 12 with the hi beam switch off..... When I switch hi beam on I lose volts in orange wires and get only 6v out of red/yellow. ?? Ground gave me no answers

When there is no voltage, grounding would not work.

My previous post had the following mistakes:

Lowbeams
Red/Yellow (right side)
Red/Blue

Highbeams
Orange (right side)
Orange/White.

It should be thus.

High beams
Red/Yellow (right side)
Red/Blue

Low beams
Orange (right side)
Orange/White.

You have 2 problems here.

1. Faulty light switch or its wiring between light switch to the headlight bulbs. The high beam circuit is not transferring the required voltage to the headlights.

2. Faulty light sensor or its wiring/ground circuit.

At left headlight, with lights turn on to low beam, ground the Pink/Black wire and if headlight turns on, you would need to repeat test at light sensor for same wire to see if the light turns on.

At light switch test the Red/Yellow and Red/Blue wire for battery voltage with high beams turned on. If you do not get battery voltage, the switch is bad.

2.

If you want to give it a try, remove the back cover of the light switch and check the contacts. You might be able to repair it

they have a locater that checks if the part is anywhere in the usa.have u checked that voltage is at the dimmer switch for voltage and when u turn on the high beams on the voltage is being sent on the wire.because the head lights go from switch to dimmer switch then to head lights. hope this helps.i think the switch is a shot in thedark.u need to check your voltages first.gl

Checked and getting voltage then not getting it. I unscrewed part for easier testing and both lights came on by moving wires around put it back in place and bent wires and forcing harness deeper into switch and lights come on. Defiantly contacts in switch I did clean and see if any thing was obstructing harness from connecting.... The car has not seen winter since 1991 so I found no corrosion.
