the truck was running fine, until i was driving one day made a turn gave it gas and it just shut off. i replaced the fuel pump and that didn't fix it. then i checked for spark and no spark. replaced coil and it still wont start. What do you think it might be? What should i check now?

Hey ANDREW LLOYD,

Just to be sure i have attached the process for checking for spark below.

If you have verified that you have no spark there are few things to try, starting with checking fuses.

I will run you through fuses and points to check for battery voltage below.
This system has a separate ignition control module as well as the ignition coil and the PCM.

Hey Andrew Lloyd,

I have attached the engine controls wiring diagram below.

Things to check first would be that fuse 4 (30A) in the under hood fuse box is in tact and has 12V at both sides.

I would also check all other fuses in the under hood fuse board as a precaution while you're there.

Guide to check fuse below:

https://my.alldata.com/repair/#/repair/article/40986/component/323/itype/32/nonstandard//selfRefLink/true

Also check battery connections and engine ground wires to ensure nothing is loose.

If this is okay the next thing i would do is to remove the distributor cap and check the condition of the cap and rotor contacts. Make sure the rotor is seated correctly and the cap is fitted correctly.

Check the connections of all of the plug wires and the lead from the ignition control module to the center of the distributor.

Check connections on the Ignition control module (ICM) and Power train control module (PCM).

The ICM is mounted to the to the radiator support, left front of engine compartment.
PCM left rear corner of engine compartment.

If all connections appear okay and you have power at the fuse you will need to check for voltage at the ignition coil and at the ICM.

Do you have access to a multi-meter or test light?

Regards, Joe

I drive a lot of short stop-and-go trips. Recently, after 3-4 trips, the hot engine will turn over but not start. Usually, after waiting 20-40 minutes the engine will start. The same problem occurred about 12 years ago when the vehicle was still under warranty and most of the ignition system was replaced. The problem has occurred a few times in the intervening years but now is occurring more often.

Hot or Cold engine

Next time it refuses to start don't wait for it to make up its mind-do below immediately to determine if its fuel or spark problem

Get a helper disconnect a sparkplug wire or 2 and ground it to the engine atleast 3/16 away from ground-have helper crank engine over-do you have a snapping blue spark? If so-you have a fuel related problem, Do you hear the fuel pump come On when you turn key on? If not check fuel pump fuse and fuel pump relay if so, check the fuel pressure to rule out the fuel filter/fuel pump/pressure regulator and listen to the injector/s are they pulsing or hook up a noid light. No snapping blue spark continue to troubleshoot the ignition system-power input to the coil/coil packs, coil's resistances, cap and rotor, distributor pick-up coil, ignition control module, cam and crank sensors and computer Note: If it doesn't apply disregard it and keep testing

Hello,

It sounds like you may have lost the timing belt. Can you check the compression for me, here is a guide that will show you how.

The battery in my truck was dead for a couple of months. It was running fine befor I let the battery die. I just put in a new battery and it won't start. I don't think it is getting any fuel. I've read there is a reset button for the fuel pump. If there is where is it and do you think this is the problem. It turns over fine but dose not start. Thanks Mark...
