Engine will not crank over - starter not working?

when key is turned i have nothing. car does not turn over or anything. its like the battery is dead but not. lights are fine. when i turn key instrument lights go out completely but head lights are fine. if i turn key around 5 times it will eventually start.

check fuse in power distributon and primary junciotn boxes, then check your starterrelay on power distributosn box and finally check relay near battery called a transit relay to see if it's giving power.

My car has been sitting for 2 years and the battery kept draining before but it at least could be started and stay running with a jump. Now I have replaced the battery with a new one and it will not even try to crank. All the lights, radio electric stuff in the car, are working but when I turn the key over all the lights go out but no cranking I know its not the battery but could it be a fuse or a relay and what suggestions do you have besides taking it to a mechanic, don't have the money. or at least to get it started to get it to one if I need to.Please any suggestions would help.

You have either a dead battery or loose connection somewhere.

my car when i crank it up it will not go in gear, but if i wait about 5-10 minutes it finally go in gear

Not an uncommon problem with this gear box. Failed servo seal or leaking valve body gasket. You will need to replace the transmission or have it rebuild.....sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

At the dealership the trans is not service just replaced so maybe a specialty transmission shop will be able to save you some money.

my 1999 jaguar S-type 3.0 v6 manual will not crank, the screen on the speedo reads fuelcomputer error and steeringcollumn locked. the OBD reader is unable to make a connection with the car.
but the steeringcollumn is not locked. the P.A.T.S light is flashing repeatedly at high rate. the fuel tank is allmoust full but the needle only shows a quarter tank left.


what could the problem be?

You have a problem with the anti theft system get it checked, also scan the computer for code/s

Thanks for reply, i had is scanned at the local jaguar shop and they could not connect with the OBD computer to my car, they don't know what is causing the connection problem.]

if they are a jag shop, they should be able to figure it out. if they told you that, then get it out of there to a shop that can tell you what is wrong.

is it a common problem that the OBD computer can't connect to the car?
by the way the shop i was at is specialized in restoration of oldtimer jags they have a scanning computer that is not the latest version (up to 2006) but it is a official jaguar tool.

no, it is not common but if it happens, there are several computers in your car and one of them is interfering with the communications.

the shop may restore them but fixing them is another story. it is a whole new world repairing them.

could a faulty fuelpump/sender unit be the cause of no cranking issue,
is it possible that it is connected in some way to P.A.T.S system?

Nocranking would not be related to the fuel pump sending unit.

The PATS, ignition switch, starter, neutral start switch and fuses are some of the components related to this. Start by checking the fuses and testing the starter.

all fuses checked ok. if i mannualy press starter relay in engine compartment fuse box the startermotor will engage and crank the engine. replaced starter relay replaced fuelpump diode and fuelpump micro relay in trunk fuse box.
could the key be corrupted in any way? the message screen shows fuel computer data error and steering collumn locked
could the steering collumn lock be jammed in open position because i can turn the steering wheel. the car is unable to check for codes because OBD scanning tool can't connect to car.

If the scan tool cannot communicate with the computer, either there is a power supply failure or you have a fault with the engine computer.

At the OBD-II DLC, ensure you have battery voltage at terminal # 16.

I have a 2003 S type Jag. 4.2 it has been running beautifully, all at once I turn it off then try to start it and at first it tries to run on3 to 4 cyls. Then it wont even do that.

I dropped my wife off at the supermarket with the agreement that I would wait for her in the car across the parking lot. when she arrived at the door of the supermarket,I started the car(ran great) I stopped the car, turned off the engine in order to load packages. When I tried to start the engine it tried to run on 2 or 3 cyls.at best. I replaced the Fuel pump (OEM) I tested for spark it has 1/3 tank of fuel .I appreciate your help Thanks very much. It sounds like your battery is going dead. Most batteries only live about three years then its time to replace them.

Do you mean pin number 16 on the OBD connector?

Our reference doesn't list an S-Type in 1999. What's the full symptom and question?

This has to be the most popular problem with the Jaguar since it was in production, You will need to jump the starter by direct method, if it doesn't crank there you will need a starter.If it start there you will need to test the ignition switch,and the brake switch and the neutral postion,if they all check out A BCM is needed
