Butt connectors come in 22-18, 16-14 and 12-10. How do I determine what gauge is the wire from the stereo harness?

Good morning,
The wiring for the radio is 18 gauge. Butt connectors are not very reliable. I would solder and shrink wrap the connections to be sure the connections are good and secure.
Okay, thanks. I was hoping to escape this process. Is there another process almost as good as soldering?

They make butt connectors with solder in the center. You bare the ends of the wires and put them in the connector. Then you apply heat and it melts the solder and seals the ends of the connector.
It is easier than what I posted and the connection is much better than using the cheap connectors that corrode quickly.
