Vehicle speed sensor VSS where is the sensor?

I attached the pin-out for the connector to the cluster. the wire is identified and the color listed gray/black.

Shifts hard sometimes. Will not go into high gear 4 on the freeway some times... 3500 rpm still in 3rd. I got an Error Code - P0715 Ford - Transmission Speed Sensor Circuit

I have had the trans rebuilt 2 times in the last 6 months. Also was told I got an error code the 5th gear is some problem... however my steering column says 1-2-D and then there is OD so it seems to only have 4 gears... then I checked the vin# and it says I have a 5-Automatic 5R55E???

there are three speed sensors turbine shaft, intermediate shaft, and output shaft sensors. one of them is causing the problem. however you can teste resistance of sensors with pics i'm sending. it can also be bent pins or harness not fully seated as well.

I'm trying to hook up the #68 - 679 (GY/BK) Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) +.
But what is the the wiring I would be looking for? I look it up and I cant find it.

There are 2 wires for the speed sensor.

Did you test for 5 volts to the sensor?

my 3.0, 2wd, 2001 ranger loses speedo and trans shift control at 47 mph--works fine under 47 mph. Just replaced vss after error code indicated. Code cleared and now no codes. Ticking sound from dash or firewall (can't tell) when braking. Pedal surges sometimes when braking.

The brake issue sounds like you may have a warped rotor or drum. As far as the VSS, that sounds like the problem. Check the wiring to the VSS to make sure it is clean, not damaged, and there is no corrosion. You may have to check the wiring for continunity to make sure there isn't too much resistance in them.

The ticking noise continues after coming to a complete stop and ceases when I take my foot off the brake--it sounds like an electronic tick. I overhauled rear brakes this weekend (they needed it), but the tick is still there and speedo drops out at 49-50 mph. I will ck continuity/resistance. I have ckd and cleaned connections on VSS. Thanks for help. I tend to agree that there is a loss of signal that is related to resistance, just not sure where wiring goes under dash.

The speed sensor has gone out on my ranger and i was wanting to know, isn't the speed sensor located on the side of the transmission or exactly where it is located. Also, if I removed it would I be able to drive it to the part store with sensor removed or would transmission fluid drain out the hole. Thank you for you help in this matter. Chad F.

The vehicle speed sensor or VSS is located in the rear differential on the center section.

Here is a diagram of its location (below)

The truck keeps throwing a P0500 vehicle speed sensor. I have replaced the sensor and traced the wires finding no problems. The truck has a remanufactured PCM in it and was wondering if it could be the wrong one or need re flashed. The speedometer works fine it just has intermittent shift problems. Also when you scan the PCM it does not show the Vin or the PCM info... Please help.... Also the air-conditioning compressor runs in the switched off position but does not get power when in the ac or ac max position also wonder if this is a PCM problem as well

The VSS is located on the transmission on the drivers side near the back. Here is a diagram BELOW to help you find it.


If the sensor and wiring or okay I would be thinking that it may be related to the aftermarket PCM, I would try a used computer and plug it in should work fine.

I have the truck listed above STX and it leaks transmission fluid from the bell housing. O'riley's told me it's the pump seal, but don't exactly know. it drives but have to fill it with transmission fluid every so often. At this point it's a waste of money to keep filling it up and marking its territory everywhere I go. Trying to figure out what is wrong, and also trying to figure out every here and there the speedometer with bounce from 0- whatever speed i'm going back to 0 and what not. I know it's a faulty speed sensor but does anyone know where it's located if it is in the transmission or not?

The vehicle speed sensor (VSS) is located on the left rear of the transfer case. I attached two pics below showing location.

As far as the leak, if it's coming out of the bell housing, it could be a few things. Often times it is the front pump seal, but there are other possibilities.

If you look at the remaining pics starting with number 3, it explains how to diagnose the problem.

I hope this helps. Let me know if you have other questions. Also, as far as replacing the VSS, there is one bolt that holds the sensor in place. Remove the bolt and hold down and gently twist the sensor back and forth while pulling it out.
