Will idel but wount runn in drive

My 92 5.7l Chevy will start about the 4 or 5 try will idel ruff and sometimes die but if I give it any gas or try to drive it it dies and will start back up runs like crap just put a new fuel filter on it the guy I got it from said he ran it out of gas and then it started doing it but after the new fule filter it started right up fine put it in drive got about ten yard it died but act like it was getting to much fule cuz it sit for about ten min and started right back up hit the gas why in park and it died again any help to get me looking in the right way would would help at lot oh got a check engine lift on to going to read the codes tomorrow
