There is a whining/loud humming noise coming from front area of car, possibly the passenger side. It only happens when the car is moving. It gets louder the faster the car goes. If I put the car in neutral and rev the gas, it does not make any noise. The noise does not change when I change directions in the car. My mechanic (who I trust greatly, and who specializes in Japanese autos) said it is the transmission. Can a transmission problem only make noise when the car is moving? Thanks.

Yes, if anything is wrong with the transmission, it can produce abnormal noises and since it only occurs when in gear, there should be little doubt where the problem lies.

While driving, does shifting to neutral to allow it to coast results in the noise? If yes, the it could be from the wheel bearings.

Thank you. I will try shifting to neutral and see what happens.

Okay, I just drove the car and shifted to neutral. The noise was still there.

Just to add to this one sounds like a wheel bearing. Do you have a Jack and Jack stands?
