Easiest way is to head to a nearby salvage yard where you can take your own tools and pick your own parts. If you are anywhere near Ohio, Indianapolis, and down through southern Georgia, do a search for "Pull-A-Part" to see if there is a yard near you. They have some new yards around Texas now, and I think even further west. I have been to sixteen of their yards. They are all very clean and well-organized, and employees and customers have always been very friendly. You pay your buck, then you can spend all day there pulling things apart. There is a yard like that in St. Louis too, but it is a typical messy, disorganized yard.
If you only have two wires that run a solenoid, it should work even if you mix up the wires. The exception would be if there is a spike-suppression diode built in like they do with the coils in relays, but I have never run into that with solenoids. When you have three or more wires, there will be a sensor involved, then the order of the wires is important because each one has its own function.
