Coolant temperature sensor location?

Thanks Roy and Danny for the reply’s. Question for Danny? When you say it’s in the cylinder head, is it in the front near the sensor that’s inside the thermostat housing? I ask because there is two sensors inside the cylinder head. One on top and one on the bottom. I thought that was the coolant temperature sensor in the thermostat housing. Let me know if it’s the sensor next to the one in the thermostat housing.

It is a 2 wire sensor. I attached another picture with the wire colors for you to match and the location description.

I was looking on Rockauto and see this. Do I have one in the radiator too? I don’t remember seeing one in the radiator? I just wanna make sure I get the right one. Never did one before in this type of car.

Hello again.

Here is a picture of a replacement coolant temperature sensor from AutoZone for your car. I've attached the picture below.In the notes from AutoZone it states the sensor is located in the radiator.You might want to check because sometimes our reference material contains mistakes. Hi Danny, thanks for the knowledge. I did notice that on Rock Auto it seems like there are three sensors for this vehicle for the cooling system. One is located on the thermostat housing, other is on the radiator and in the rear of the head below the intake manifold. It’s confusing because Rock Auto says they are all coolant temperature sensors.

I believe the one in the radiator is for the fan controls for the cooling fans.

There also may be a sensor for low coolant level in the radiator as well.

But the coolant temperature sensor for the engine temperature is in the rear block?

Considering there are multiple sensors for your car that control multiple functions we need to ask you what the symptom is. Are the fans not working? Car overheating? Gauge on dash not working? Knowing what the symptom is will help us point to which sensor to replace.Hope this helps and thanks again for using 2CarPros.

I was having my coolant temperature sensor on my scanner not giving me a reading in specs. I had replaced the thermostat housing with the sensor in the housing a year ago. Every other sensor for the cooling system is original. So I wanted to replace the temperature sensor to save me time in the future. But I had to ask first because I seen 3 sensors for the coolant temperature and was confused.

Rock auto doesn’t state which sensor goes into the block. It just says use together with the one matching originally.

Did you check the voltage at the sensor?

No I did not. the question I have is, is the sensor hard to get to or do I have to jack the vehicle off the ground to gain access to it?

I will be honest. It is tight to access.

So you’re saying it would be complicated to get unless it was on a lift? Jack stands wouldn’t be easy to get to it? And the voltage of a good temperature sensor is 5 volts, correct?

I got them from the top. I lay over top of the engine to access it.

Yes, put your voltmeter in both leads when testing. Red lead on one terminal and black in the other. That way you are testing both wires.

Any idea how far it is to get too? Is it too far down to get access? Or very easy to get?

Did you identify the sensor location as in the pictures we attached?

Like we said, there is no easy way of getting to it.

Hi Danny, I apologize getting back to you months later. The coolant temperature sensor on my vehicle is not in the rear cylinder head. I looked and didn't see any sensor in back of the cylinder block. It is located inside the radiator. I will be getting the part.

That is the switch for the cooling fan. It is not the coolant sensor for the computer.

Just curious to know the symptom again. You mentioned the scanner was saying the coolant temperature sensor was not giving a reading. Is the car overheating?
