Hello, I'm Danny.

It is possible to bypass the A/C compressor but you need to understand that first the A/C compressor needs to be removed. After removal a idler/dummy pulley can be installed and a different size serpentine belt can be installed in its place.I can provide a diagram if needed.Hope this helps and thanks for using 2CarPros.

I have a dumb question!

If you unplug the electrical connection from the A/C unit (actually the A/C clutch) will the pulley spin freely?

Hi CJ,

Yes, the pulley will always spin freely. That's the clutches job to engage the unit.Only time there's a problem is when clutch seizes and won't disengage, That's when belts get destroyed.

But...

What if he's in A/C mode or heat with a defrost setting,

and Mr. Compressor locks down.

Belt cannot turn, belt gets destroyed.

Turn off A/C or heat with defrost settings or simply unplug the clutch so it cannot accidentally engage.

Clutch pulley now works fine as an idler only, the compressor is now a brick bolted to the motor.

It could be either a shot compressor or shot clutch pulley bearings (until it's confirmed).

I brought it up since it was not mentioned or tested to see which one went to pot. If it were the compressor shot, he could still get by without even taking it off.
