What is purpose of "Hold button" on side of gear selector.

That is to lock the gear to prevent it from up or down shifting and used under certain circumstances such as when you need to be depressing the accelerator and releasing often and don't need the transmission to be up or down shifting too often. Picture yourself driving on a very winding road at around 40mph.
