Lost key remote combo, which is best; replace the ignition switch or have a new key made?

My boyfriend lost his only car key that is remote and key combo

He wants to get an ignition switch replacement with new keys instead of just getting keys cut.

Is it required to get door locks changed too if he gets the ignition changed since he won't have a key for the doors and if the battery fails in the remote, he won't be able to get in to it. What is cheaper and smarter to do?

Hello,

It would be ideal to get a new key cut with the fob and have it programmed to the vehicle.

Changing out the ignition with a new key will have extra steps and as you know it requires changing out the locks on the door, trunk or having the lock cylinders rekeyed if possible.
This will make everything much more complicated.

Hope this answers your questions.

Let me know of any concerns.
Thank you.

As Sean alluded to replacing the lock cylinder isn't the best way. Not only would the key no longer fit the doors, but the new keys will need to be programmed into the vehicle so they work and that isn't something you can do without a programmer or a dealer level scan tool and security code.
