2004 Volvo XC90 massive oil smoke from exhaust

I had a few times that a lot of smoke came out of the tailpipe for less than a minute, then went away.
Then 1 of the turbos shredded internally, (don't know if it is related). Now the repair man checked & said that the oil is not coming from the turbos, but 2 quarts burned up driving it home the other night from his shop, huge smoke cloud, cops pulled my husband over on his way home.

for that amount of smoke, i would be suspecting a turbo seal fault, oil passing from the turbo feed directly into the exhaust and not into the combustion chamber first, this is a common turbo failure, this will have to be checked by a turbo specialist.

Failed turbos have caused vehicles to smoke so I agree with Mark, but if that has being fixed and you are still smoking, it is time to check the pcv system. Have them remove the oil trap box and see if it is plugged up. If it is then the oil pan needs to be removed so that all the sludge can be cleaned. I recommend you also replace the oil pick up tube seals at this point as well if they find sludge build up on the block once the oil trap is removed and also replace the oil trap. Lack of maintinance is what causes the sludge build up. Volvo recommends service every 7500 miles but that is only a "MAJOR SERVICE" and should not be used to base your oil changes on that alone. Oil changes are oil changes and major services are somethng else. I am a little old school and think they should be every 3000 miles. I have opened up enough of this engines to know and see so much sludge in them.
