2004 Volvo XC70 front wheel noise/loose

The fron wheels seem loose and have a knocking noise. I went for an inspectioin and they thought some "rods" needed replacing. Any ideas and is this something I can tackle on my own?

They maybe talking about tierod ends. Not real hard of a job but will need a spliter tool and an alingment will be needed.
