2002 Volvo XC70 instrument cluster

It is not as simple as just removing and installing the instrument cluter? First thing you need to do is read off data from the current control unit and right down all the information. After you install the new cluster The current data must be entered into the new control module after replacement. Would you be able to read and program this data? The only way to do this is using Volvo's diagnostic equipement?
