2002 Volvo S60 problem as below

Black smoke is over fueling, i would start by pulling the plugs to see if you have one that is sooted up, this will indicate a faulty injector, start here.

I really appreciate your prompt reply to my problem. I will be having someone look into your answer in a couple of days and will get back to you on the outcome. In the meantime may I ask - "does one need a special tool to extract the plugs and, if sooted up, is it an easy proposition to replace the faulty injector? Also, do you sell the replacment injector set-up?

Hi there,

To replace the spark plugs you only need a spark plug socket and these are usually included in cheap home auto socket sets. the injectors are not hard to remove, but as i live in Aust you would be better of getting injectors there, look at the link on the bottom of this reply.

May I follow up on the ongoing problem as aformentioned?
The car is a Diesel engine Volvo S60 (Year 2002) Saloon.
The problem: Black smoke emits from the exhaust (severely) when I go for acceleration and it continues (much less severely) when I just cruise along.
I sent the car to a Volvo mechanic who tested the car electronically and the instrumentation pointed to the EGR valve as being the problem. I have had a new EGR valve fitted - no change with that. I have had a leak test carried out on the injectors - no change with that either. Could anyone PLEASE help with this problem.

My error sorry i was thinking petrol, but black smoke is still over fueling, i would still have the injectors serviced, this is a job for a specialist as there is expensive tooling required. you will also need to get the injection pump metering tested as well, any diesel workshop well be well aware of all the causes of your problem.

Thank you for your prompt reply. I will take the car to have your recommendation completed.
In the mean time could you answer the following: On 2 separate occaions I inadvertantly filled the car with petrol instead of deisel, by mistake of course. Could this be the cause of the present problem?

Hi there,

Yes petrol in a diesel engine is not good, if the fuel is to diluted you can cause sever overheating of the close tolerance component in the injector pump and the injectors, diesel is also a lubrication for these parts and petrol is far to dry and problems can easily occur.

Thanks again for your esreemed answer to my question. May I once again approach you with the following? Whilst looking for the answer to the bl;ack smoke problem it was mentioned that it could jave been the TURBO because a smeering of oil was found on the air intake. Could this also be a factor, or even THE factor?

Hi there,

You will get a small amount of oil in the induction that is not a problem, oil smoke is very blue in colour and when turbos fail they by-pass large amounts of oil and you often see oil specks on the back of the car, your problem will be fuel related.
