Electrical problem
2002 Volvo S60 6 cyl Automatic 154000 miles

Recently my 2002 Volvo S60 has been having some issues that no one can seem to diagnois. First, the car will start up and within five seconds an error message will appear that reads 'Brake Failure, Stop Safely ASAP' and the car engine will shut off. All the electonic components are on but the engine is off. It will do this four or five times and then turn on without issue. This 'Brake Failure, Stop Safely ASAP' error message will also come on while I am driving and cause all of the gauges on the dash to stop working but the car will still run normal. I have had the brakes checked several times since this started and each time the mechanic said the brakes look great and so do all the brake lines. Does anyone have any insight as to what could be causing this issue?

You will need to take it to the dealership for proper diagnosis. Seems like you are having a CANbus problem with the high speed network. Fault could be an issue in the harness or a control module going offline and dragging the rest of the control modules down with it. If the instrument cluster is going out and the SRS light comes on as well then you also have a problem with the low speed network.

A "BRAKE FAILURE, STOP SAFELY" MESSAGE CAN BE A FAILURE IN THE ELECTRONICS OF THE BRAKING SYSTEM, SUCH AS THE ABS. EITHER A SENSOR, THE MODULE, OR ANYTHING IN THAT SYSTEM. NOW, WITH THE ADDED SYMPTUM OF THE ENGINE TURNING OFF AND ALL GAUGES ON THE DASH STOP WORKING, THIS CAN BE A "CENTRAL ELECTRICAL MODULE", "DISPLAY INFORMATION MODULE" OR SOME FAILURE IN THE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK. IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU ARE GOING TO HAVE TO TAKE IT IN TO A REPAIR FACILITY THAT CAN PERFORM A PROPER DIAGNOSIS.
