i WENT TO A LOCAL VOLVO OFFSHOOT REPAIR SHOP - USED TO WORK IN A VOLVO DEALER, BUT OPENED HIS OWN VOLVO SHOP.

HE SAID ALL 4 SHOCKS WERE GONE ON THIS CAR - TO REPLACE WOULD BE $1400. WOW - SEEMS WAY HIGH. hE DID NOT GO INTO DETAILS ABOUT ANY OTHER WORK BESIDES THE SHOCKS, BUT HE SAID THE $1400 WOULD INCLUDE GENUINE VOLVO PARTS.

IS THIS A RIPOFF, AND SHOULD I GO TO A SHOCK SPECIALIST?

The front struts and rear shocks are pretty expensive to begin with and also what is his hourly labor rate? It is up to you if you want to use Volvo parts or aftermarket shocks. Aftermarket seem to make the ride a little more stiffer depending on what you bought and sometimes it can also effect your alignment as well if say the strut were a little shorter then the OE. But like the saying goes you get what you pay for right. Call Volvo and compare there prices also. If it is the same price find out what type of warranty you are getting. At Volvo you get a 1 year unlimited warranty on work done there verses some others that may just do 12 month/12k miles?
