Sat navigation unit in boot does not read the Volvo disc the head display tells me this.
Once it did and I mean once it display a list of things like diagnostic, and so on . Then nothing. And radio used to come on and off if I switched it on. Now it does not come on at all. So what I would like to know without dealerships mentioned is, can I put a normal radio in or can this be fixed ?

I would try to fix it because the radio and navigation system are tied to the rest of the car. Lets test for ground and power at the unit. Here is a guide to help you get started and the wiring diagrams below:

Remove the unit and check it the conencros of water damage (corrosion as well).
