2004 Volvo C70 key won't turn

2004 Volvo C70 6 cyl Automatic 83000 miles

The key won't turn past the 1st position. Car won't start. I moved the gear shift to neutral and park and the tilt wheel around, no joy. What could cause this?

Do you have more then one key? If you do have another key, if you use that key as well do you have the same problem? If you do the most likely problem is the steering column lock is bad. Remove the steering column covers and on the right side of column is the switch. Remove the 2 screws and pull switch out and see if the key will turn. If it doesn't replace the column lock. If it does turn replace the switch.
