1998 Volvo C70 rack and pinion

I am told my volvo needs rack and pinion assy replaced. If I am driving at high speed 60+, and rack and pinion fails, do I lose all control of steering and in danger????

Please advise.

What exactly did they tell you is wrong with the steering rack? What problem are you having with the steering?
