I have removed everything but the box which contains the heater core. I have removed the nuts that hold the box in place. I haven't remove the nuts the hold the A/C side on. Do they have to be removed? If so, do I have to go so far as to drain the coolant as well?

Yes you will need to drain the coolant and be prepared to have some coolant spillage inside the car, keep an old towel or something to catch the coolant. As to the nuts for the A/C side I am not sure what you mean, if you are referring to large tubing, BE CAREFUL! You are working around a high pressure system and it may require evacuation before removal. If they are small screws then I dont see the harm. Do you have a repair manual? Repost if more assistance is needed.
