1991 Volvo 740 Headlights are not working

have you tested the dimmer switch then? could be faulty

How can the dimmer switch be tested? It is part of the turn signal multi function switch in the steering column.

I think that is beyond us, we will have to take it in. We can change fuses, relays and switches, but have never taken a steering column apart. We will have to check the repair manual we have to see if it covers that. Thanks

go to a local repair shop. not the dealer , unless its under warranty. but I guess they said they dont' know whats wrong huh? get a couple opinions from the local repair shops on how much it would cost to test it. you may be pleasantly surprised. also when you bring it to a local shop. they will find out whats wrong for free. then they will tell you how much it will cost to fix it. if its too much then they will have to give you your car back. but altleast you know whats wrong with it. just tell them not to fix the problem without your consent. because you may not be able to afford it.

Thanks, Had hoped for a good tip to fix it. Most local shops here want you to pay for them to figure it out at $XX per hour. Had problems with a 91 Mazda a while back as it had no tail lights, ended up paying about $280 the guy spend over 8 hours figuring it out, but did not have the heart to charge us for all the time, only half. It was fixed and we did get the equipment ticket dropped.

Seem my son was putting in an amp and sub woofer in his Volvo when the headlights stopped working. Now he only drives in the day time but instection is coming up.

oh i didn't know your son put an amp in the volvo. then its obvious he shorted somehting out. oh boy. your gonna have to check all wires for any burnouts and all fusible liniks. I had this problem years ago and i came to find out that the body control module had a shorted wire. I scraped the end of it off and stuck it right back in its socket. problem fixed. But yes you have to look really good at the wiring. check grounds too

yup, I had a problem with my old volvo because of an amp, everything went haywire all because of a stupid blown fuse, I was gonna say that to you but it seems legit007 beat me to it haha hope you got his response b4 you took it to a mechanic
