Hi there,
I have a 1988 240 DL sedan, recently my daughter drove the car about 100 miles in 100 degree heat when suddenly the car started sputtering, running rough, and then came to a stop. She was unable to start it up. After waiting about 30 min the car started back up and ran fine, for a short while, she was able to drive it another 30 miles when it stopped again. Again, after waiting a period of time the vehicle started up again. The next day she was returning home, and again, after about 100 miles in very hot weather the car came to a stop. And again after waiting 30 min she was able to start the car and finish her trip. Since this event I have been driving the car around town, usually less than 30 to 40 miles at a time with no problem at all, the car runs great. It appears to only happen after the car is warmed up and after traveling a long distance. What do you suggest may be the problem? I am baffled at where to even begin to look to repair this problem.

My '88 240 had the same problem. I ended up replaced the fuel pump fuse that is located on the engine compartment in the area of the power steering fluid fill. The orginal one (which appeared to be a modification) was corroded. I replaced both the fuse and the holder with a weather sealed type from autozone.
