I have a 1986 Volvo 240 dl. In a matter of one day, while on my regular drive to work while driving up a hill, I noticed that there was a noise coming from the engine that sounded like metal rattling around when I reached 35 mph. At the same time as the noise happens, I lose power, and a black smoke pours out of the exhaust. This has never happened before. The car runs great on flat land, and I have no problems until I reach any sort of minor incline. Also the transmission seems to not want to shift when it regularly does when I am heading uphill. Any ideas as to what the problem could be? When this happens on an incline, I have to take my foot off the accelerator, and almost come to an idle just to make it up.
